Through endlessly intriguing
stages the child develops in not
only this, but every area.
Qualified guidance gives him
opportunity to progress to the
best of his ability as he adjusts to
the requirements of social
behavior.
"Before a child can learn to
read" Charlotte Celestine
explains, "he must have motor
coordination."
Pre-school provides a
balancing board, two inches by
four inches by seven feet long,
which fits into brackets and may
be raised from one to five inches
above floor level. The children
walk the board as a game and are
benefitted physically as well as
mentally.
In the Potlatch clubhouse of
the Hood Canal Federated
Woman's Club, Pre-School meets
twice a week throughout two
three-month semesters beginning
on September 15 and on
February 1.
Starting at 9:30 a.m., an hour
of free play is enjoyed by the
two-to-four-year-aids. They may
choose their companions and all
equipment is available to them.
Mrs. Celestine feels that this
period is the most important of
the entire session.
"Left to follow his own
instincts," she declares, "the child
will turn naturally to the area
most beneficial to him."
Mothers in attendance give
needed supervision and assistance
without interference. During a
15-minute snack-time children sit
at small tables, at each of which a
mother presides, and crackers,
raisins and fruit juices are served.
The "Story Circle" follows.
Seated in a semi-circle around
their instructor, pre-schoolers
listen while she reads to them
from a selected book; recordings
are played, and group singing
enjoyed; individuals sing a song or
tell a tale, as they become
accustomed to speaking and
performing before an audience.
They are encouraged toward
mutual giving and self-expression.
During ten minutes of
exercise, next on the schedule,
youngsters jump, hop on one
foot, play "circle-games" and are
taught to respond to oral
directions with bodily activity.
The last half-hour before
dismissal at 11:30 a.m. is devoted
to a group creative project which
may be painting, pasting, or
cutting with scissors.
Hood Canal Pre-School is
visited twice yearly by Audrey
McKnight, Director of
Parent-Child Education in
Olympic College, who is available
at all times for assistance. The
college offers five seminars
annually for which all parents are
eligible.
Children are not the only ones
to learn from the Hood Canal
Pre-School. Participating mothers
become knowledgeable, and learn
to observe their youngsters
objectively in relationships with
others of the same age. As they
realize that all go through
identical stages, they feel less
alone in dealing with problems
and they more readily accept the
legitimate role that must be theirs
in the educating of the young.
