Islanders Enjoy Maple Beach Picnic Sunday Steve Stephen wishes to thank all of the people of Harstine Island who gave him birthday greetings last Monday. He re- ceived 237 birthday cards. Steve said, "If I am half as good a mailman as hal been stated it is because of the won- derful patrons I have on my route." Steve also wished to thank the Journal and Ziegler's studio for the picture which ap- peared on the front page of the paper. Streckenbach were among those who attended the Mason gounty Highway Department pic- nic at Maple Beach, Lake Isabella, on Saturday. They report a won- derful picnic and quite a large turnout. MISS. At the meeting Wednelay they laid plans for a hake sale and apron sale to be held starting at 12 n(>on at the hall ell Sept. 5. This will bE fol- lowed by a social evening and supper. An electrical appliance will be awarded to some lucky person. Proceeds from all of this will be added to the water fund. Everyone you talk to these days is really pleased with the oiling of the low road. This has cut the dust down and really makes the trip enjoyable. Add this t(> the interest built up by the Bud(Is' new home adding another attract- ion to the low road and it is a very interesting drive. THE H. V. Glaser home was very busy this weekend with Mrs. (]laser's twin sister and family of Hoquiam arriving with Suzie Glas- er for the weekend. Their daugh- ter, Vicki, stayed over for a visit with her cousins. Mr. and Mrs. David Tevis arrived Saturday night to complete the list of guest Mr. Tevis brought his limited Hydroplane along and Mrs. (}laser reports that she is now a hydro fan. Dr. Hartley and his brother, Mr. Hartley, celebrated their birthday anniversaries on Friday and Sat- urday oflast week. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond McCulloch were among those dropping in with birthday greetings. Mrs. Bottoni reported that they arrived safe and sound in San Jose. She said an interesting part of their trip was that they came across five forest fires in Oregon. One of the fires delayed their trip several hours. We sincerely hope that Mr. Michael McAuliffe has recovered from a bad strop throat, and is feeling fine now. The Glaser twins are going down there today to add to the twin confusion. Miss Cindy Waitc and Miss Von- nee Meeks hosted a birthday dance at the hall in honor of Miss Elaine Wingert. Some 20 teenagers gath- ered there to wish Elaine a happy birthday. The George Waits home looked like a public park this past Sun- day as some 17 people gathered there to picnic and watch the Gold Cup races. Mr. George How- ard, captain of the Harstine Fer- ry, saw the Gold Cup fro" the first time. Must be a busman's holiday, go on vacation and watch the boats go by. Islanders seem to be doing all right in the Mu,ic Bingo contest on Channel 5. Mrs. Monica Prid- ham, and Mrs. Dixie Arata have won prizes recently. Only thing is it takes some seven weeks be- fore you get your prize. Mrs. George Simmons and son, Jim, spent one day shopping and visiting in Tacoma. Jim and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Briggs of Shelton, are now in Westport getting in some deep sea sahnon fishing. Wish you luck, folks. Other islanders getting in some deep sea fishing this weekend were Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Sim- mons and the Dick Glasers who went to Port Angeles to try their luck. On their way home the Simmons stopped in Bremerton to visit the Joe Glasers, The Dale Peugh beach was a very busy place recently when Mrs. Peugh had friends in for a lovely beach picnic. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Knauf and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Caste and Mrs. Glenn Yates all enjoyed a very fine day. THE HARSTINE Island Ladies club is busy making plans 'for a rummage and plant sale to be held in the P.U.D. building on Sept. 25 and 26. Anyone who has any contributions for this is urged to call Mrs. Raymond McCulloeh or any other member of the Ladies club. The Paul Chaffees spent four days with Paurs sister on Hood Canal. Then they journeyed to Olympia to meet their grandson, David Chaffee of Vancouver. They Fair Days At Elms i i J i. While there they visited Diablo and Rock Dam by way of a 360 foot ride in a ski lift, a quarter mile ride by car, another half houL boat ride and finally a jeep rise to the top of the dam. Eleanor re- ported that it was a very interest- ing and exceedingly beautiful trip. Mr. and Mrs. Nat Stairs an(l. daughter Cindy motored to Dye- hut Sunday. They have been fishing in the Canal without much hick so Monday they went to the ocean beaches where they managed to outsmart some razm' clams. Mrs. Adams took sick and m now confined to a Bremerton hospital. We do sincerely wish you a very speedy recovery. Lovely Point Wilson hosted a large group of its owners this weekend with the Michel Gills of Seattle out to their home, and the George Wangelins were out for lart of the weekend, then they left for Vader, Wash., for a family reunion. Mr. Herb Spahr and Patty were ()tit as was the Nee- miss, the Birches and the Gold- schmidts. MR. WALTER Scott and son,  Mr. and Mrs. Ialph Scott and children, Sally, Sushn and Garry, have left for a trip to Horsefly Lake in Canada and then on to Lake Louise for a vacation trip. They plan on doing some fishing, but generally just to "take it easy." Mr. Alvin Anderson has his saw mill going on the Island to- day. Peggy reported she didn't have any lnck at Longacres this Sunday, but that doesn't dampen her spirits a bit. Mrs. Francis Cooper has been released from the Shelton hospital and is now at home recuperating. 4-H Club Meets In Purvis Home By Mrs. Ray Krateha SOUTHSIDE -.. Busy Bell 4-H club meeting was held at Diane Purees Wednesday. Diane gave a demonstration on how to cream shortening and sugar. The four members of the club that attend- ed camp at Panhandle are Becky Jackson, Diane Purees, Cheryl Chambers and Darlene Holtorf. The next meeting will be held on August 26. Josephine Beecraft of Yacolt spent a week visiting Mr. and Mrs. Earl Leggett. LI'E WIRE 4-H club meets Thursday at Diane Groshog's. Mrs. Mamie Fortes, a former resident of the Valley, passed away Monday at the Allyn nurs- ing home. Mrs. Ferris is the mother of Mrs. Kelsy Tanner. Seventeen young people from the Valley are attending the Bible Camp at Panhandle Lake this week. Mrs. E. J. Ahern of Brem- erton is the cook. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hunter and son, Billy, Mr. and Mrs. Art Nick- laus and son, Artie, and a nephew are making a hiking trip over the mountains. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tanner re- turned home from a week's vaca- tion to Jasper, Canada. They went over the Yellowherd Trail and back by way of Banff and Spokane. They took a five mile ride on a snowmobile oil the Atha- basca tongue of the Columbia glacier, also rode on the ski lift at Banff and concluded their trip* with a swim in Lake Roosevelt at Grand Coulee Dam. Lovely Point Wilson hosted a large group of its owners this weekend with the Michel Gills of Seattle out to their home, and the George Wangelins were out for lart of the weekend, then they left for Vader, Wash., for a family reunion. They plan on doing some fishing, but generally just to "take it easy." Mr. Alvin Anderson has his saw mill going on the Island to- day. Peggy reported she didn't have any lnck at Longacres this Sunday, but that doesn't dampen her spirits a bit. Mrs. Francis Cooper has been released from the Shelton hospital and is now at home recuperating. 4-H Club Meets In Purvis Home By Mrs. Ray Krateha SOUTHSIDE -.. Busy Bell 4-H club meeting was held at Diane Purees Wednesday. Diane gave a demonstration on how to cream shortening and sugar. The four members of the club that attend- ed camp at Panhandle are Becky Jackson, Diane Purees, Cheryl Chambers and Darlene Holtorf. The next meeting will be held on August 26. Seventeen young people from the Valley are attending the Bible Camp at Panhandle Lake this week. Mrs. E. J. Ahern of Brem- erton is the cook.
