SCHOOL BRIEFS
UW students from
county excelling
Nineteen students from Mason
County earned a spot on the dean’s list
for the winter quarter at the Univer-
sity of Washington.
To qualify, a student must have
completed at least 12 graded credits
and have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of
a possible 4.0. .
The North Mason students are
Cheyenne L. Filer of Allyn, a junior;
from Belfair, junior Joshua Michael
Geiser and freshman Daniel Juan
Juan; from Grapeview, senior Steffen
Tyler Riener and senior James David
Stevens; and from Hoodsport, senior
Theodore Thaddeus Richert.
The Shelton students are senior
Mayra A. Arellano, senior Amanda
Marie Davis, junior Matthew Kief
Davis, junior Dalton James Edwards,
freshman Mack Rowan Howard, se-
nior Megan L. Jacobsen, junior Maya
Ledoux, senior Madison Rose Mul-
lins, freshman Christopher Apollos
Richert, senior Ariela Maya Sanchez,
sophomore Jessica Michelle Schreiber,
senior Laura Whitten and junior Zim-
ing Ye.
Rotary clubs aurard
27 scholarships
The Shelton Rotary Club and the
Shelton Skookum Rotary Club re-
cently awarded 27 scholarships to
Mason County students.
The money comes from the pro-
ceeds from last year’s OysterFest.‘
The students submitted their ap-
plications online. Members from both
Rotary clubs reviewed the applica-
tions and interviewed the candidates
via Zoom or on the telephone. The
named scholarships are bequeathed
by former Rotarians wishing to leave
a legacy to the community they
served.
Academic scholarships of $1,500
were awarded to Shelton High School
students Nathanael Ostheller, Grace
Renecker and Jayde Smith, and
North Mason High School student
Spencer Michael Pruitt. Shelton High
School graduate Kiara Ventura re-
ceived a $1,000 scholarship.
Laura Henry was awarded a
$1,500 Continuing Education Schol-
arship to attend South Puget Sound
Community College.
Vocational scholarships of $1,000
were awarded to CHOICE High
NONPROFIT BRIEFS
Schbol graduate Lillian Crawford;
North Mason High School graduate
Beau Ward; and Shelton High School
graduates Morgan Izzi, Cheyanne
Kenyon, Jonah Michael Perry and
J enavieve Stripland.
Lukas Hansen of Washington Vir-
tual Academies received a $1,000 R0-
tary Inspirational Scholarship.
Civic Engagement Scholarships of
$2,000, sponsored by the Rural Devel—
opment Initiative, were awarded to
Beau Harvey of Shelton High School,
and Austin Karr of Washington Vir-
tual Academies.
Individual scholarships went to
Emily Adams of Shelton High School,
$1,500, Robert Burns Scholarship
(performing arts).
Molly Ye of Shelton High School,
$1,500, Janis Byrd Scholarship (busi-
ness arts).
Lily Sequoia Dose of Shelton High
School, $1,500, Joy Doescher Scholar-
ship (human services arts).
Mackenzie Uch of Shelton High
School, $2,000, Doug Larson Scholar-
ship (medical arts).
Matilda Smither-Winslow of Shel—
ton High School, $1,000, Dick Oltman
Scholarship (environmental studies/
tourism).
Isabella Porter of North Mason
High School, $1,500; Lee Gillis Schol-
arship (education arts).
Chase Moran of Shelton High
School, $1,000, Terry Olsen Scholar—
ship (vocational arts).
Grace Marie Toney of Shelton High
School, $1,000, Mary Penny Scholar-
ship (medical arts).
Josephine Beaudoin of the Unia
versity of Washington, $1,000, Tom
Spikes Scholarship (business arts).
Aaron Boothe of Shelton High
School, $1,500, Bryce Finley Scholar-
ship (computer science).
Kain Tinjero-Hernandez of Shel-
ton High School, $2,000, Paul Bun-
yan Scholarship (Forest Festival);
Michael Gilman of Shelton High
School, $1,500, Timber the Ax Man
Scholarship (Forest Festival).
Knutson excelling
at Baylor University
Savannah R. Knutson of Shelton
earned a spot on the dean’s list for the
spring semester at Baylor University
in Waco, Texas.
To be eligible, a student must earn
a GPA of 3.7 or better while taking at
least 12 graded semester hours.

The Statewide Health Insurance
Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) answer
your questions about Medicare at a
free “Welcome to Medicare” presenta-
tion via Zoom at 1 pm. today.
The Office of the Insurance Com-
missioner and Senior Services for
South Sound offer the program. SHI-
BA can provide information about
prescription drug programs, including
Medicare Advantage plans, ~Medicap
(a Medicare supplement) and low-in-
come programs to help pay for Medi-
care.

Donate blood
at senior center
Donations of blood are being accept-
ed by appointment at a pop-up donor
center Aug. 26 and 27 at the Mason
County Senior Activity Center, 190 W.
Sentry Drive, Shelton.
The appointments are required to
provide a safe environment and to ad-
here to social-distance requirements.
The center will not admit walk-ins,
guests or people younger than 16.
