“This is a great opportunity
to see more folks appreciate
Belfair for the gem it is with
increasing recreational oppor-
tunities,” said Mendy Harlow,
executive director at the Hood
Canal Salmon Enhancement
Group, on her and Port of Al-
lyn’s third push to receive
funding from the state Recre—
ation and Conservation Office
(RCO) to complete the Sweet-

project.
Lary Coppola, executive di-
rector of the Port of Allyn, and
Harlow led a technical pre-
sentation via Zoom on June
26 that Harlow said was well-
received.
The primary elements of
the proposed park are a natu-
ral playground, interpretive
trail describing the history of
hydropower in Washington,
and an American Disabilities
Act (ADA) accessible fishing'
dock and hiking trail.
The fishing dock would be-

the first ADA dock in Mason
County.
In addition to the recre-
ational opportunities, a key'
element of the project is re—
rOuting Sweetwater Creek to
permit fish passage. ‘
“At the Salmon Center,
three big objectives we have
are to have environmental ed-
ucation opportunities for kids,
also habitat restoration and
we conduct-a lot of research,”
Harlow said.
, This project checks all
three boxes.

Sweetwater Creek flows
into the Union River estuary.
The Salmon Enhancement
Group works in the river an-
nually to monitor Hood Canal
summer chum populations
and health. This species is
threatened under the Endan-
gered Species Act.
According to the project ap—
‘ plication, the “project restores
salmonid access to 1.2 stream
miles.”
In order to complete the
stream reroute necessary to
permit salmon passage, the
Port of Allyn needs to acquire
Brian Petersen’s parcel.

The port acquired the
Schindelheim parcel —— adja-
cent to the Petersen parcel —
earlier this year through an
intergovernmental transfer.
The North Mason School Dis-
trict acquired the Schindel-
heim parcel through a RCO
Aquatic Lands Enhancement
Account grant in 1997.
“This parcel was acquired
by the school district in 1997
with the idea to 'help with
environmental education,”
Harlow said during the Aug.
3 Port of Allyn meeting, “it’s
really part of a bigger plan.”
