Port of Allyn starts work
on boat launch expansion
The Port of Allyn is beginning the demolition of
the Ogren home, adjacent to the Port’s Allyn boat
launch.
Property acquisition, demolition and project
construction are being funded by a Recreation and
Conservation Office grant.
The parcel will become the site of a two-lane
staging area for boaters in line for the launch ramp.
The staging area will be able to accommodate six
vehicles and trailers. ‘
The demolition will be completed by Groat
Brothers, a commercial demolition and hazardous
waste disposal firm out Of Longview.
According to Port of Allyn Executive Director
Lary Coppola, the projected completion date is by
the end of 2020.

Friday, Aug. 14, 1942
The men went out early
but no fish. Vina and I hiked
over the hill where I thought
a good building site was. Very
warm out. In the afternoon
we went out on the Ho River.
Sam and Bill went fishing and
Vina and I drove up to Lake
Ozette. It was so warm we
went swimming. The men got
15 trout. We ate them for din-
ner. Saw 15 baby wild ducks.
f you ask me, this
Iwas a perfect week
for Mary Theler. It
was nice summer weather
and they went fishing for
salmon and trout on the
northwest part of the pen-
insula. I had to chuckle
a bit when Mary tells us
she had to come in off the
boat due to seasickness. It
happens to all of us. While
the men were fishing,
Mary and Vina drove over to Lake
Ozette, one of my favorite places.

“Grump Ventures LLC appeal is denied. Mason
County’s rescission of its SM-6 Certification on
January 28, 2020 is sustained on the grounds that
Grump lost its nonconforming use mining rights
through cessation of use from April 3, 2017 through
April 3, 2019,” Olbrects wrote in hisdecision.
The SM-6 form that permitted Grump Ventures’
nonconforming use rights was rescinded by the
county in January. .
Grump Ventures was issued the form in order to
move forward with state permitting processes and
eventually operate a 66.5 acre surface mine in a
residential zone.
According to Olbrechts decision, Grump Ven-
tures will retain the ability to operate a hobby
mine, or noncommercial mining of materials at a
level that does not require a state Department of
Natural Resources reclamation permit.
North Mason School District
releases reopening plan
The North Mason School Board discussed the
district’s final reopening plan during its special
meeting via Zoom Wednesday evening.
The district will begin the 2020-2021 school year
with 100 percent distance learning, transitioning
to hybrid and in—person learning as they receive
further guidance from county and state health of—
ficials.
Students will have three remote learning op-
tions: -
I HomeLink — using the district’s homeschool-
ing program. Students are entered into a Parent
Partnership program, offering families with sup—
port from school district staff to develop a learning
plan that meets each family’s individual need. Stu-
dents will work on one course at a time.
I North Mason online — using Edgenuity, an on-
line curriculum that is monitored and supported by
a North Mason teacher who is assigned to specific
students. '
I Hybrid option — supports students without con-
sistent Wi—Fi connectivity with thumb drives, hot
spots and electronic learning devices. Teachers will
, share instructional videos, post assignments and
e
ta
schedule whole class, small group and individual
video conferences. Classes will meet synchronously
when students have access to Wi-Fi hot spots.
A resolution was presented before the school
board after the Herald’s deadline.
The full plan is available on the district website
at nmsd.wednet.edu/News/learning-model#sthash.
