Some, who live at Sunset
Beach on Chapman Cove, stated
their beaches were muddy now,
and if the extension was allowed
it would further complicate the
problem.
Objections to the adverse
effect on their beaches and views
were also voiced by property
owners on the other side of the
bay whose property would face
the extended log storage area.
The Simpson officials stated
they would welcome suggestions
where the additional storage
could be located at the Chapman
Cove site to alleviate these
problems.
A question was raised as to
why Simpson could not go to an
entire dry-land operation, getting
all log storage out of the bay.
Roder stated the main
problem was that the mills were
built to receive logs from the
water and that it was necessary to
store a certain amount of logs in
order to have the kind necessary
for the various operations on
hand when they are needed.
Another thing, he said, is that
Simpson buys and sells logs to
maintain the supply of the type
of logs it needs and that these logs
must be transported by water.
In order to get logs into the
mills without using the water, the
Simpson officials pointed out, it
would be necessary to fill in in
front of all the mills, which would
also require a permit which would
be almost impossible to get.
The commissioners voted to
continue the hearing until 7:30
p.m. August 27, arranging to have
an evening meeting at the request
of the protesting group, who
stated there were more people
who would like to attend but
were unable to attend an
afternoon meeting.
Roder issued a statement
Tuesday outlining the company's
position. The statement said:
"Simpson is continuing to
improve its Oakland Bay log
storage area. Since the installation
of the company's log sorting area
west of Shelton and the bundling
of logs, giant strides have been
made in cleaning up the bay.
"All log loads, both from the
sorting yard and from the
contract loggers, are strapped by
steel bands and lowered carfeully
into the bay by cranes. This
operation eliminates the breakage
and loss of excess bark caused by
the former loose log dumping

method by par-buckling from
railroad cars or trucks. The
bundled logs take up 25 percent
less space than before and call for
fewer rafts to be made.
"A concerted effort has and is
being made to eliminate as much
storage space as possible within
Oakland Bay. Simpson has
already eliminated 60 acres of
storage on Munson Point and has
a tentative agreement to eliminate
30 additional acres, thus
eliminating all log storage on
Munson Point. The objective of
eliminating the total of 90 acres
at Munson Point will require the
approval of the 30-acre addition
as requested from the Mason
County Commissioners. The 30
acres is proposed to be located in
upper Oakland Bay and is an
extension of the present storage
there.
"Oakland Bay is actually a
very versatile business, recreation
and home site community.
Improvements are being made,
and we are designing equipment
to clean up past debris as our
plans progress. Contracts have
been underway for some time to
pick up deadheads. Future use of
the bay will continue. Many
transactions are from outside the
Shelton Working Circle and the
interchange of log rafts is a
necessary part of Shelton's
economy."
