Joseph O'Neil set out from Lake Cushman. The historians will celebrate the anniversary of the more accessible east-to-west route along the South Fork of the Skokomish River to the Quinault River, which was completed in 1907. This resulted after Alfred H. Anderson, owner of the Potlatch Logging Company, made a deal with the U.S. Forest Service to build a horse trail from his lodge at Lake Cushman to the Quinault area. Anderson provided the funding and the Forest Service supervised the location and con- struction of the trail. Picnic participants on August 19 are asked to bring a sack lunch. Society members will provide des- serf, juice and water. So that ev- eryone can get to the trailhead at the same time and not get lost, participants will gather at 12:30 in the Skokomish Valley Grange Hall at 2200 West Skokomish Val- ley Road and proceed from there to the site. Joining the group for the day will be the Back Country Horsemen of Mason County. There are picnic tables at the site, but people may wish to bring a folding chair. Picnickers are ad- vised to wear comfortable cloth- ing and be prepared to spend the day outdoors. Short hiking alter- natives will be available to those wishing to explore the area. Oth- ers are invited to sit and visit. All programs and events of the historical society are open to the public without charge. Denny Temple, who serves on the committee with Jenne, also ad- dressed the commission on August 7. Temple said the current system cannot be improved without more money. "AS IT READS, if you lef it like this, you would be no better offthan what you are now," he said of the resolution. Temple said he's Temple said what the citizens committee wants to do is support the commission and get the mea- sure passed in November. Jeff McHargue, chairperson of the com- mittee, also expressed his worries about having a sustainable fund- ing source for the local emergency communication system.
