I I 1 I I I I :I ) N THE AMERICAN VOCABULARY, a "gadget" is somethinganything--which performs a. useful func- tion. Almost every home possesses at least several gadgets- almost every office, every business house, every factory. It might be a trick can opener, a sales- producing advertising item, a striking kind of display fixture, a labor-saving switch. It might be manufac- tured of wood, of metal, of paper, or of plastic. The fact that Americans are a gadget-loving people can mean a great deal to the, future prosperity of Mason County. There is no reason why.this area could not derelop a sizable "gadget industry" an industry which would, provide new : :einpl0yment opportunities, new purchasing power, new avenues of .trade. For MiS0n county possesses skilled woodworkers. Certainly • lason County men and women are as inventive as any others. The area possesses the raw materials for wooden, paper and plastic gadgets -- and since so many Mason County citizens, were employed in airplane plants and ship- yards during the war, there are now many with skills as aluminum and sheet metal workers. The development of a prosperous "gadget industry" would be a good thing for these men and women in prticular and a fine thing for the community as a whole. Of course an idea, for a new sales-worthy gadget is necessary ---biit the idea is only the first step. Someone some Mason County--and all America--was .founded and built on the fundamental principle that any man or woman should have the right to work--should have the rl.ht to start a businessof his own and to enjoy the fruitp of hl labor. As a result, no other nation in the whole wold can approach the industrial might of America. In no other, nation has the standard of living risen so high for the individual willing to work for St. This results fro, the American Way. of, Life, and is the pathway to an even gieater America. Why change it? .... The sponsors of this series of advertisements devoted to com- munity betterment are citizens'of this-community. They own homes here. Their children go to scItool here. They have a deep sense of responsibility to the individual citizens and to changes which will affect the community. They are interested in devel- oping a healthy community ollowing the American Way of Life, and thus keeping Anerica and Mason County 'strg for the generations to come. 'indiVidual or group of individuals .must have the initiative andthe perseverance to buildthis Idea into a going industry. There are investments to be madeinvest- mentsin time and money. There are risks to be taken, just as there always are when any business venture is established or expanded. W , , * ,, ' ,, • he mdmdual gadgeteer must therefore have something in addition to an idea, something in addition to ' initiative and ambitiorl and enterprise, He--or she must have the basic, fundamental freedom which the American way of life has alwaysassured. Eor if,an individual is to risk time and money andwork to create a new enterprise, the individual must also have the freedom to build that enter- 'prise I'to make it grow and prosper- and to enjoy the fruits of his efforts if the venture succeeds. That freedom is•a part of America's heritage, it is the strong, driving incentive which made men build our first pioneer indUstries--our railroids, shipping lines, factories, stores. Because men were given this freedom of enterprise America became the strongest, most prosperous, most successful nation in the world. Yes -- the American w.ay-of doing things has made possiblo . a better life for every man, woman and child. It has built beautiful churches, fine schools, great libraries, thriving cities. And in the future -- with this American ideal of individual initiative as a guide -- even greater things can be accomplished. There can be new industries, new factories, ,, , ,, new communities -- even new gadgets to make a fuller, more comfortable, more enjoyable life for every citizen in Mason County'... to add immeasurably to the opportunities which everyone seeks. t .
