final score 10-3. Jacobs Insurance
eliminated the Merchants 6-2 on
Saturday. Mike Nutt had a solo
homer and Samplawski scored on
a fielder's choice for the
Merchants' only runs.
Jacobs Insurance had
eliminated two Shelton teams
after suffering an opening round
loss. They had been shut out by,
you guessed it, Shelton's other
entry, Jess' Mets. After going
scoreless for four innings, the
Mets came up with four in the
fifth and two more in the sixth
for the win.
With bases loaded, Bill Nutt
singled home two. Steve DeMiero
sacrificed home another run.
Consecutive hits by Scott
Swisher, Jon Armstrong and Willy
Hill added the final two runs. Bill
Nutt pitched a four-hitter in
picking up the win.
Oasis Tavern, 1973 runner-up,
was the next team sent into the
loser's bracket by Jess', 3-0. The
Castle Rock team had also won
the OK Roofer/Fir Cone Tavern
Invitational earlier this year. Jess'
scored three runs on eight hits
while Bill Nutt threw a one-hitter
for his second win.
The Mets scored all of their
runs in the first inning. In that
stanza, Joe Earl, Rob Mills, Lynn
Spilseth and Willy Hill had singles,
while Scott Swisher ripped a
ground rule double for the three
runs.
Against Smokey's Pizza of
Vancouver, the Mets scored nine
runs on 16 hits for a 9-2 victory.
Nutt gave up just five hits and no
earned runs. Swisher hit an
inside-the-park homer with one
on to start the rout in the first
inning. In the second, Mike Clary
led off with a homer.
Three innings later, the Mets
sent 11 batters to the plate as
they scored six runs on five hits.
Swisher doubled with bases
loaded for two runs. A throwing
error let in two more runs. Hill
doubled and advanced Clary to
third. Nutt sacrificed in Clary and
Ferd Carniero singled home Hill
to finish the scoring.
Now Little Joe's of Yakima
and the Mets of Shelton were the
only undefeated teams left after
the 6 p.m. games. They had to
play each other at 8 p.m. An
unusual event for winner's
brackets of any tournament, let
alone a state tourney. It didn't
seem to bother the Mets, though,
as they came up with a 9-3
victory.
Jim Richards pitched the first
three innings and got credit for
the win. With the Mets ahead 2-0
on Hill's two-run double in the
third, Nutt came on to pitch four
innings of relief. The Mets lead by
only 5-3 after six innings, but
four runs in the seventh dumped
Little Joe's.
Hits by Earl, Mills and
Fredson had scored one run.
Scott Swisher was given an
intentional walk to load the bases.
Then Jon Armstrong picked up an
easy RBI by walking in Mills. Hill
got two more RBI's with a single.
Oasis Tavern, whose only loss
was to the Mets, eliminated
Wenatchee Olys 4-0, Smokey's
5-0 and Little Joe's 6-I on
Sunday to earn a rematch with
Jess'. It didn't do them any good,
because Nutt pitched a no-hitter.
Two errors ruined his bid for
a perfect game. He struck out the
side in the fifth to help his own
cause. Swisher's triple in the third
scored three runs; Nutt doubled
home Clary in the fourth; and an
RBI single by Armstrong in the
fifth accounted for all of Jess'
runs.
Armstrong went four for six
with four RBI's in his substitute
role in the tournament.
Named to the all-state team
were Scott Swisher, Rob Mills,
Mike Clary and super pickup from
Lemon's, catcher Willy Hill.

THIS MAN IS AMAZING. It's Bill Nutt, who pitched 32
innings for Jess' in the state "A" fastpitch tourney without
giving up an earned run. He had four wins, 24 strikeouts.
