Aiming to "Strike Out Cancer,"
as promoters put it, six local coed
softball teams enjoyed a weekend
of sporadic sunshine and continu-
ous fun earlier this month in bu-
colic Callanan Park.
"The annual One-Pitch Tourna-
ment proved fun and laughter can
be had - all for a charitable cause,"
reports veteran director Monica
Deemer. "With family and friends
who are fighting or have fought the
battle, the cause seemed suitable.
We thank everyone who came to-
gether to play for the battle."
Emerging triumphant from
the round-robin affair, with a 5-0
record, were the Shelton Shock-
ers. "But not easily," says Deem-
er. "Wheels gave them a battle
and took a close second. Sharon's
Nursery placed third and an en-
thusiastic Probst Homemeats took
fourth. And many thanks to Fud-
dpuckers and Blackstar, who also
participated and contributed lots
of enjoyment and team sports-
manship."
TOURNEY ALL-STARS in-
cluded the champs' Tracy Bishop
and Ralph Delamarter, Wheels'
Ariel Miller and Tim Sheedy, Sha-
ron's Amy Brown and Jacob "Chi-
co" Hernandez, Probst's Rachel
Dreon and Anthony Bonilla, the
Fudds' Tracy Duchene and Ray
Bartoff and Blackstar's Tori Willis
and Lewis Rodriguez.
At the end of the second day's
competition a special home-run
contest was held. Here's Deemer's
report:
"Tim Sheedy took a windshield-
smashing first place for the men,
with his brother Larry tailing be-
hind. Nancy Samples won it for
the girls, followed by Debbie John-
son."
The tournament also featured a
brief ceremony for local umpiring
legend Denny Temple. "After 45
years as an umpire Denny is tak-
ing the bench and retiring," says
Deemer. "We will miss the long
chats he had with spectators and
players that gave all of us plenty
of time to take our positions.
"A FAREWELL THANKS was
given by John Brown and fellow
players to bid Denny a good fare-
well."
Deemer also recognized those
who made donations to this year's
tournament cause, including Little
Creek Casino Hotel & Restaurant,
Safari Tans, Probst Homemeats,
Catwalk Studio & Hair Design,
Dr. Busacca, Lumbermen's, Les
Schwab, Sears Portrait Studio and
Signs by Erin.
