The Port of Shelton revisited a
discussion regarding the future of
its Sanderson Field Events Center
and Fairgrounds on Tuesday, but
took no formal action regarding the
property.
The Federal Aviation Adminis-
tration (FAA) has mandated that
the port revert the property back
to airport usage by 2013, effective-
ly closing the fairgrounds, which
have stood there for about 50 years:
In June, port Commissioner Jay
Hupp introduced a Fairgrounds
Future Use Plan, which proposed
a continued use of the property de-
spite the FAA's ruling.
The port placed the draft plan on
its website, and the FAA responded
with a letter.
"The Port was notified by our
June 29, 2001 letter ... to not re-
new the County Fairground lease.
We honestly thought that 13 years
of notification was long enough
for the County to find another site
for the fairgrounds," wrote Carol
Suomi, manager of the Seattle Air-
of losing federal grants.
Supporters of the fairgrounds
facility packed the port meeting on
Aug. 7, at which Hupp suggested
sending a revised version of the
plan to the FAA for review again.
The commission voted at that
meeting to amend the document.

a letter dated July 31,~ 2012.
Suomi expresses concern in the
letter that the port is leasing the
fairgrounds at less than the fair
market value and that the use of
the land is not compatible with the
port's most recent Airport Master
Plan from 1997.
She said continuing to use the
land as a fairground past 2013
would be contradictory to terms
laid out when the federal govern-
ment transferred the ownership of
the land to the port in June 1957,
and would put the port in jeopardy
discussed the document only to
table it, or lay it aside until a later
date.
Commission Chair Dick Taylor
stated an intention to call the FAA
and set up a meeting with the port
commission at a later date.
He also brought up the idea of
forming a citizen's advisory com-
mittee to address the future of the
fairgrounds. However, both Hupp
and commissioner Tom Wallitner
said they think the port should
wait to take such action until after
a meeting with the FAA.
