I can't swim for multiple
reasons, which I'm about

County to escape the sur-
prising heat of the sum-
mer. An older sibling tried
to teach me how to swim,
got bored, abandoned me
in the water and I ended
up sinking until just my
head was surfaced and
my little arms'were mov-
ing frantically to get me
back to shore. Luckily, I
was only in about 2 feet of
water, but I feel the panic
moment was understand-
able.
Throughout my life,
there have been simi-
lar instances during
which I felt like I would
drown. The time a wave
came up behind me at
Ocean Shores so strong it
knocked me down and I
had trouble getting back
up about a foot from the
shore. The time my sister
and I swam 5 feet into a
lake to stand on a rock big
enough for us, both fell
off and she kept herself
afloat by pushing my head
down. The time when I
was 13 and swimming in a
crowded pool in California,
steadily sinking on my
journey to the other side
no matter how hard I dog-
gie-paddled until the only
part of me above water
was one hand which my
sister grabbed and used to
pull me up and to the side
of the pool.
I don't know'what it is
about me and water, but
I can not swim to save my
life.
Last weekend, after
floating turned out to
be impossible, I tried to
swim like I saw the High-
climbers do last fall and
winter. I tried to do the
breaststroke, but ended up
basically hopping through
the lake while moving my
arms across through the
water in a close approxi-
mation of the correct form.
I tried to do the basic
freestyle stroke -- left ear
in the water as right arm
moves forward and vice-
versa -- but discovered I
still can't stand to have
the side of my face in the
water. This quickly turned
back into my usual doggie-
paddle swim.
Luckily, because of sea-
weed, I was only in about
4 feet of water so at all
points I could just put my
feet down and no longer be
in danger of drowning.
Swimming is definitely
harder than it looks.
'Though I must say that I
always have fun when I
take to the water, once ev-
ery five or so years to try
it again.
