Projects get
under way
on local
streets
By NATALIE JOHNSON
It may only be a dent in
the work that needs to be
done, but city crews are re-
paving eight blocks of Shel-
ton streets this month.
"Basically what they're
doing is some random ar-
eas in town that are in
some really bad shape,"
said City Engineer Mike
Michael.
Two of the blocks are on
Cedar and Pine between
7th and 8th Street.
"A portion of them are
up in the Mountain View
area on King Street," Mi-
chael added.
Every summer, city
street crews go through
town and pick out some of
the worst streets to repave
as part of the city's routine
maintenance of streets, he
said.
"We budget on the or-
der of $40,000 to $60,000 a
year depending on what's
going to be available to us,"
he said.
If a street isn't too badly
damaged, crews will chip
seal the road, Michael
said.
On several of the blocks
in downtown Shelton un-
dergoing maintenance how-
ever, crews are completely
redoing the road, using
a pavement reclamation
machine, which pulverizes
the existing pavement and
mixes it in with underlying
soil to strengthen the road
bed.
"That's the most exten-
sive type of rehabilita-
tion that we do," Michael
said.
For the past week city
crews have used the rec-
lamation machine to tear
up the old pavement of the
downtown blocks, but are

waiting to lay down the
pavement.
Tuesday, the Mason
County Board Of Commis-
sioners approved an agree-
ment with the city that al-
lows the road crews to take
advantage of county mate-
rial contracts to buy the
asphalt.
The city will likely buy
the asphalt and start pav-
ing next week.
When crews do start
paving, they will use a
new machine recently pur-
chased by the city - a Lay-
ton Box, which is a small
road paver towed behind a
large truck:)* '
"This we¢l~ Commission-
er (Dawn) Pannell broke
the obligatory bottle of
champagne on the Layton
Box," Mayor John Tarrant
said Monday, "Our street
crews have been busy prep-
ping several streets."
However, one city road
project that crews had
planned on completing this
summer will have to wait
until next year.
Originally, the city
planned on completing
a repaving project on
K Street before school
started, since Mountain
View Elementary School
sits on K Street," Michael
said.
The city only received
its final funding approval
from the Federal Highway
Administration Thursday,
which doesn't leave enough
time to advertise for bids
and complete the project

before fall weather turns
rainy and cold.
"We've decided to delay
that until next summer,"
he said. "We're hoping to
advertise that job late in
the fall or early winter."
The grant funds ap-
proved by Federal High-
ways will hold over until
next year, Michael said.
