County sets hearing for marijuana moratorium
By NATALIE JOHNSON
The Mason County Board of
Commissioners voted Tuesday
to set a public hearing to con-
sider a moratorium on collec-
tive marijuana gardens at 9:30
a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the
county commission chambers.
On July 19 the Mason
County commission enacted
a 120-day moratorium on
such gardens, which had
been recently legalized by
Washington State medical
marijuana bill 5073. State
law required that the county
schedule a public hearing on
the matter within 60 days o)f
enacting the moratorium.
According to the bill, in sec;-
tion 402, "Quahfying patients
may create and participate in
collective gardens for the pur-
pose of producing, processing,
transporting, and delivering
cannabis for medical use."
In July, Mason County
Commissioner Tim Sheldon,
said that under the bill, 10 pa-
tients in Mason County would
be able to share a garden grow-
ing up to 45 cannabis plants.
Sheldon first brought up
the moratorium and has ad-
vocated for stricter control of
medical marijuana in the past.
