John Henry Cooper, Jr.
John Henry Cooper, Jr.,
98, died Wednesday, August
17, 2011 at Panorama Con-
valescent Center in Lacey.
He was born on May 3,
1913 in the front room of
the family home in Asbury
Park, N.J., the only child of
Mary and John Cooper, Sr.
He graduated from Par-
son's School of Design with
a Teachers Certificate and
started working in the vari-
ous school districts near
his home teaching art. He
received his bachelor's and
master's degrees and a
doctorate in 1962, all from
New York University. He
married Stephanie Keyl,
in 1939. After her death in
1952, he married Doris Keyl
in 1953.
He had many odd jobs to
pay the bills. He gave work-
shops for craft classes, sold

Rahway
High School in New Jersey.
He became Rahway High
School Principal and was
there for 15 years. In 1965,
he resigned from Rahway
High School and became As-
sociate Professor of Art and
Education at California Lu-
theran University in Thou-
sand Oaks, Calif. He ran the
summer school programs
and started the on-campus
'and off-campus continuing
education programs. He was
appointed Dean of Gradu-
ate Studies and Continuing
Education at the Universi-
ty. He held this job until he
turned 70 and returned to
teaching graduate courses
until 1990 when he moved
full-time to Harstine Island.
He was ,active in many
community projects. He
chaired the Red Cross chap-
ter, started a community
concert series and was an
active church member. He
wrote and directed many
plays and vaudevilles while
living in New Jersey. He
worked at the radio sta-
tion WCAP, "The Voice of
Asbury Park." He acted in
radio plays and soon was
writing scripts for the plays.
Cooper was in the cast of
"The Strollers," a theater
group in the area. He acted
in plays, wrote scripts and
painted scenery in various
theaters around his home.
When he lived in New
Jersey he did many magic
shows. He performed pro-
fessionally in New Jersey,
New York and Pennsylva-
nia, He was the resident
magician at many of the
resort hotels in the Pocono
Mountains.
Cooper established the
"Wizard, Wand and Wab-
bit Club," a magic club for
couples, and wrote and pub-
lished "The Trick Tipster"
for many years. He emceed
at magic conventions and
performed there too. He
was awarded "The Order of
Merlin- Excalibur" by the
International Brotherhood
of Magicians.
He co-authored the book
"Plastic Craft" published
by MacMillan and "The 4 S
Theory of Education," pub-
lished by California Luther-
an College.
He was a poet with a col-
lection of poems that were
created all during his life
starting from the time he
was a boy.
After Cooper's move to
Harstine Island, he revived
his artistic talents and cre-
ated the Harstine calendar
for many years and hand-
drawn note cards and prints
plus many other handmade
items, which he sold at the
Harstine Island Farmer's
Market. For 10 years he was
the Harstine Island colum-
nist for the Shelton Mason
County Journal, Aside from
his own scripts and produc-
tions he has appeared in
many of the Harstine Is-
land Theatre Clubs plays.
He starred in "Our Town,"
had parts in "Oklahoma,"
"Sound of Music," "The Fan-
tastiks" and many others.
He presented a whole eve-
ning of "Fun With Magic" as
one of the Theatre clubs pro-
ductions many years ago.
The Theatre Club also pro-
duced a combination of his
half-hour radio shows that
were written over many
years.
His family shared that
he was particularly fond of
his News and Views group
on the island and led the
Harstine Island Men's Bible
Study often at his home.
John is survived by his
wife of 58 years, Doris;
daughters Susan Gunder-
man of Jewitt City, Conn.,
Kathleen Neprud (Hans) of
Ventura, Calif., Janet Coo-
per of Colorado Springs,
Colo. and Cindy Rinaman
(Bruce) of Thousand Oaks,
Calif.; sons Jonathan Coo-
per (Karen) of Harstine
Island and David Cooper
(Kathy) of Larkspur, Colo.;
14 grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents and first wife,
Stephanie.
A memorial service was
held on August 20, at Mount
Olive Lutheran Church in
Sheltofi.

Lorraine Charlotte Kelly,
75, died Tuesday, Aug. 9,
2011 from cancer at home
in Shelton, surrounded by
family.
She was born to Ervin
and Winnifred Wakeman on
Aug. 3, 1936 in Mason City.
She raised her five chil-
dren in Ketchikan, Alaska.
She also

Ketchikan General Hospi-
tal as an admitting clerk
and was the director of so-
cial services when she left
12 years later she was the
director of social services.
She worked for the Puget
Sound Auto Auction in Au-
burn, when it opened start-
ing out as a billing clerk,
she was promoted to office
manager and then became
a factory manager for the
auction. She was often re-
quested by the corporate
office to travel to other auc-
tions around the U.S. to
train and troubleshoot op-
erations. Kelly was asked
to assist the auction in re-
solving several challenges
after her retirement in
1996.
She and her husband
built a home at Dewatto Bay
on Hood Canal that served
as the gathering place for
many family events for 20
years. Kelly was instru-
mental in getting electric-
ity, telephone, and internet
brought to this remote loca-
tion for herself and others
and initiated and managed
the Dewatto Road Associa-
tion for 15 years.
In retirement, she wrote
a weekly article called the
!Dewatto Doin's' for the Bel-
