More than a dozen
Highclimber starters are
returning to the Shel-
ton High School football
team this season.
Head coach Matt
Hinkle, in his 18th year
at the head of the High-
climber football program
said there are seven or
eight returning defense-
men and six or seven re-
turning offensemen.
"We've got quite a few
returning seniors," he
added.
The five returning
starting seniors are Cam-
eron Dayton at center,
Zac Fennel at running-
back, Drew Johnson on
defense, Joe Strand on
defense and Cody Tarver
on offense and defense.
Last week, the team
attended camp in Nah-
cotta, and Hinkle said
camp went well for the
Highclimbers.
"The kids progress
quite well last season,"
Hinkle said. "This year,
we fully expect to con-
tinue that upward move-
ment and content for a
playoff position. We'll be
continuing on the track
the kids set last year."
Finally, Hinkie en-
couraged the commu-
nity to attend the Black
and Red Scrimmage at
7 p.m. on Friday, Aug.
26. He said there will be
scrimmages between the
offense and defense for
the varsity team, the ju-
nior varsity team, the c-
team and several Shelton
Kings teams.
"There'll be a barbeque
and an auction also,"
Hinkle said.

Field Sept. 3

Fifty-four helmets rose as
one before the 2011 North
Mason football team hustled
through its end-of-practice
chant: "Born a Bulldog, bred
a Bulldog, Bulldog 'til I die!',
Just two days into the
practice schedule, the North
Mason Bulldogs were al-
ready revving up for their
first game, which will be at
3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3
at CenturyLink - formerly
Qwest Field - in Seattle
against W.F. West.
"Getting the opportunity
to play at GemturyLink is a
real nice shot in the arm for
our program," head coach
'Jeff Bevers said: "I think
that's kind of why we've been
averaging 40 guys a night in
the weight room this sum-
mer. We'd like to have a
little more respect for our
program and it's a great mo-
tivator for us."
Bevers said the team is
also looking forward to play-
ing W.F. West again, after
losing to them last season.
"It's an exciting feeling to
play on a field the pros have
played on," junior linebacker
Brody Stromberger said.
Junior quarterback :Tom-
my Renne added that it's
exciting and humbling to
play where his heroes have
played.

"We feel we'll be competi-
tive when we step on the
field," he said. "I think we're
as good as any team in our
league but there are some
things we need to clean up."
Bevers said the Bulldogs
are a relatively young team
only chance we'll get to play this year, with nine or 10 se-
there, so we won't hold any- niors. Of those seniors, only

"The dedication, want-
to and drive are there and
those are supposed to pay
out," Bevers said. "We're go-
ing to do the same stuff we've
done in the past, but we'll
be cleaning up our offense.
We've always been scrappy
with our defense, though."
The team has a hard work
philosophy, he added.
Stromberger, who was a
first-team linebacker last
year, are two of the leaders
of the team, Bevers said.
"I think we're really go-
ing to work together as one
because all we want to do is
win," Renne said.
