a nice bunch of girls and
they're fun to work with.
The goal is to win more

Newman is already lead-

juniors Julie Johnson and

"I think the team is re-

said. "There are a lot of

everyone's got a good at-

She added that she
thinks the team will kind
of surprise other teams in
the league this year.

Youth, enthusiasm infuse
Lady Highclimbers
By EMILY HANSON season will come
Roughly 45 girls attended the first day
of try-outs for the Shelton High School
volleyball teams on Monday, Aug. 22, but
only three of them were returning to the
varsity team.
"We're pretty young this season," ju-
nior varsity coach Willow Shanahan said.
"We only have a handful of seniors and
juniors with a majority of sophomores
and freshmen."
The varisty team is coached by Steve
Beck while Brittney Dobson coaches the
c-team. By the end of the week, the girls
would be sorted into three teams of 10 to
12 girls each, Shanahan said.
"We're really green this year but we
have a lot of girls mov-
ing up," she said.
The two team cap-
tains, seniors Caitlyn
Ernest and Lolly Jones,
said the girls trying out
are young but enthusi-
astic.
"I think it's going
pretty well," Ernst said.
'~rou can see who re-
ally wants to play and
who's working hard."
Jones said she
couldn't predict hoW the
season would turn out,
but that she thought
the team would have a
good bond.
%rolleyball is a lot
about experience," Sha-
nahan said. "Our skill
is there but ~che experi-
ence the girls gain this
up to the skill level."
Last year, the Lady Highclimbers fin-
ished seventh out of eight teams, so the
coaches said they are hoping to do better
this year.
"We're rebuilding our program and it's
promising," Shanahan said. "We try to
do more individualized coaching because
some athletes respond to grilling while
others need to be nurtured."
Until school starts, most of the prac-
tice days will happen twice a day, she
added.
"The teams will be decided this week,"
Shanahan said. "But if a girl shows up
late, we'll give her a three-day try-out to
see where she fits."
