Young 2011 SHS boys' tennis By EMILY HANSON After _losing six varsity players last year, the Shelton High School boys' ten- nis team is very young and inexperienced this year. "I have two returners from last year and they're both juniors," head coach John Perry said. "We have two seniors this year, but they're both new to the team." On the first day of practice, Monday, Aug. 22, about 15 boys tried out for the team, but Perry said he anticipated be- tween 20 and 25 boys will join the team by the time school starts. "It's going to be a tough season for us because we're so young and we're in the toughest division in the state," Perry said. "Our goal is to teach the kids the game and get them out here to be competitive." The returning jumors -- Alex Deacon and John Pentony "-- both play fairly well last season, Perry said. "We had a lot more peo- ple turn out last year, so hopefully more turn out," Deadon said. "l just really hope we have a solid varsity team this year." Deacon played doubles last year but said he's been playing a lot of singles this summer and is thinking of switching for the tennis season. Because of an m- jury, Deacon wasn't able to begin practice with the rest of the team, but he said ten- nis is all he's thought about this summer. "This is a building year for us," Perry said. "The more kids I can get out here, the better." With the team being in the 4A classi- fication and with state tennis not taking place until May, the team usually only makes it to districts, Perry said. "Usually if our guys can make it through districts, we've done pretty well," he said. Last season, the team finished in 10th place and the team goal is always to finish higher than similar schools in the league, Perry said. "I'm going to have to change my coach, ing style a little bit this season because I have so many new kids," Perry said. "I'm going to have to work with the returning players to get them competitive again." Perry said he's happy to see five or six freshman on the team already this sea- son, which will help him build the team up more next year. New coach for Bulldog boys' tennis By EMILY HANSON Cliff Harris, the North Mason High School head girls' tennis coach, has transitioned to the boys' team this season. Harris said 17 boys have signed up for the team so far, with seven returning from last year and no se- niors. "Tennis is a recreational sport for the boys so we're trying to change that." Harris said. "Quite a few boys have been out playing this summer, though." To improve on the boys' 0-16 record last season, Harris said he plans to make practices more com- petitive. "We're working on fun- damentals, drills and basic tennis," Harris said. "I'll be trying to get them to do things all the time on the court. ] think we'll be com- petitive." The 'team has four vet- eran players this year. The two juniors are Cody Champine and Noah Wil- son and the two sopho- mores are Ty Garland and Brennan Ayers. Freshman Beau Eddy is going to be a big help for the team. as he's from a strong tennis family, Har- ris said. "We are going to be strong as a team as our younger players improve their skills," Harris said. Champine said he thinks the team is looking a little short on players but that they'll do ok this year. "Our varsity won't be as strong as last year because we lost the motivation of the upper classmen, but we'll be alright," he said. Harris said North Ma- son is the second small- est school in the Olym- pic League and therefore will be competing against schools that have more than 1,000 students in them. "Our number one, two and three singles will be strong and so will our number one doubles team," Harris said. "We just need to get together our num- ber two and number three doubles."
