DAN MORGAN won All-League honors last year at
cornerback as a junior, when he made 47 tackles. But watch
number 40 at halfback. He carried 91 times last year and
gained 480 yards for a 5.3 average.

him on a football field. It's Shelton senior Fred Gold, 270
pounds of tackle.

JUNIOR CRAIG JACOBSEN has some placekicking
experience from last year. He is one of six returning
lettermen in his class for Shelton.
Shelton High School girls
tennis coach Ruth Willard has
plenty of experienced players
from last season returning for the
1973 team. She lost just two
seniors from last year's team
which had five wins and four
losses.
Sophomore Lori Huber
played number o~ singles for
Shelton last year 1~ a freshman
and went 7-2. Shereturns with
her letter and a summer of
tournament experience.
Number two singles players
last year, sophomore April Kuhr
was 5-4 and earned her letter as a
freshman last season. She, too,
has been playing on the summer
tournament circuit.
Junior letter,roman Mary
Wittenberg, who played number
three singles last year, also
returns. She will play doubles this
season, said Mrs. Willard.
The Highclimbers lost their
number one doubles team of
1972 by graduation, but the
number two doubles team of
senior Connie Bennett and junior
Robin Schad, which posted a 4-1
record, returns. Schad has added
experience this year from the
summer tournaments.
Others turning out for the
team who are not letterwinners
are Patty Brewer, a junior who
has played in summer
tournaments; senior Carol
Thonrpson, sophomore Karen
Kramer, sophomore twins Robin
and Renee Trucksess, freshman

Little League football begins
its fourth season in Mason County
this fall All boys who are in the
sixth grade in the Southside,
Pioneer, Hood Canal and Shelton
school districts ate eligible to
participate.
All participants must have a
physical exanrination and a note

available at the schools and
turnouts will begin during the
first week of school. Those who

Mrs. Willard said many of the
top players are already in good
condition because of the summer
tour. She started official turnouts
on Wednesday, August 22 and
~said the team is involved in a
"crash" ladder play because its
first match is September 6 against
North Thurston, during the first
Vernon Gonzales of Shelton
took first place in a freestyle
wrestling tournament in Longview
sponsored by Lower Columbia
College on August 4.
Gonzales, who will be a senior
at Shelton High School this year,
won four matches in a period of
about six hours to take the
championship in the 141-pound
weight class. He beat a wrestler
from Highline Community
College in the finals. He was
entered in the open class for those
17 years of age and older.
Gonzales wrestled at 148
pounds for the Shelton
ltighclimbers last year and took
third at district, fourth at
regionals and went to the state
AA tournament.
Freestyle wrestling, said
Gonzales, is a little rougher than
high school or college wrestling.
Things like slams and full nelsons
are legal in freestyle wrestling, he
said. "Sometimes you can even

The girls are also working on

Mrs. Willard is starting her
tenth year as coach of the girls
tennis team at Shelton High
School, and she said this season
will be her last. Her 1967 won the
Olympic League championship

Vernon Gonzales
in
AI Hopp, Shelton High School
tennis coach, won two doubles
titles at the recent Olympia City
Tennis Tournament. Several other
players from Shelton also fared
well in the tourney
Hopp teamed with Jim Smith
in the men's open doubles to
defeat Bill Coates and Nell
Brandsma in the finals, 6-3, 4-6,
6-4. He won mixed doubles with
Kathy Hemion. The pair beat
John and Margaret Mundt 6-3, 6-1
in the finals.
Sean Byrne beat Greg Start in
identical 6-1 sets in the finals of
the boys 12 and under division.
Both boys are from Shelton; both
had beaten Olympia opponents
earlier to reach the finals,
Dave Hanson reached the
finals of the boys 16's and lost to
the number one player of
Olympia High School, Tony
Kronawetter, 6-2, 6-0. Lincoln
Miner made the semifinals in the
same division.
In the junior men's 18 and
under doubles, Jack Frost and
Jeff Okano lost their semifinals
match in three sets. Steve Evander
and Jim Kowalczyk lost in the
finals of the men's 21 and under
doubles.
Jack Frost, Shelton High
School's number one player last
season, reached the quarterfinals
of the Southwest Washington
Regional Center Tournament held
two weeks ago. Bruce Dorcy and
Dave Wicken made the finals of
the boys 14 and under doubles,
where they lost to Mike Hawkins
and Gene Ockinga of Tacoma in
identical 6-2 sets.
Hopp beat three opponents at
the Pacific Northwest Grasscourt
Sectionals in Cowichan Bay,
Vancouver Island, a week ago to
make the semifinals and he teamed
with Smith to win three
doubles matches before losing in
the semifinals. The tournament is
the largest in the area and is open
only to Northwest residents.
After a first-round bye, Hopp
beat Ralph Mclntyre of lrvington
Tennis Club in Portland, 6-2, 6-2.
He then dumped Dan Merrill of
Tacoma 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. it was a
satisfying win for Hopp, who was
beaten earlier in the year at the
Lakewood Summer Festival
Tennis Tournament by Merrill.
The teams of Leo and Betty
Finnegan and Ray and Marian
Reames tied for first in the first
flight of the third annual Skippers
and Mates Invitational Golf
Tournament played at
Alderbrook August 25 and 26
They had 124 scores.
Howard and Jean Andersen
were second in first flight with
126, and Lucian and Thelma Gray
were third with 127. in second
Eight Indian hardball teams
will compete in the Skokomish
Labor Day Baseball Tournament
this Saturday, Sunday and
Monday at the Skokomish
baseball field.

Nisqually, Muckleshoot, Little
Boston, Warm Springs, Oakville,
Skokomish and another unnamed
squad will go for first prize
money of $200 starting Saturday

Vancouver, B.C 6-7,7-6, 6-4, then
defeated Bruce Robertson and
Dan Merrill of Tacoma in another
marathon, 6-7, 6-4. 6-4. The),

coach Harlen Buitenveld has
announced that uniforms will be
handed out for Blazer eighth and
ninth graders Thursday, August
30.
He said ninth graders will get
their uniforms at 9 a.m. and
eighth graders will receive their at

to get their physicals, insurance
and ASB cards.
