noise are not only acting irrespon-
sibly but are breaking the law,
and they know it. Using unmuf-
fled compression brakes is illegal,
and they should be pulled over and
ticketed for faulty equipment.
Federal, state and local laws
have been written to regulate
faulty equipment. The laws spe-
cifically regulate unmuffled com-
pression brakes. Some laws have
also been written based upon the
noise or nuisance factor. The fines
are heavy. Get caught in the City
of Shelton and fines can be as high
as $1,000 (for a third offense). If it
is charged as a misdemeanor, the
driver could even do time in jail.
All along the drivers' neighbors
and customers have been listen-
ing, and hopefully now the com-
missioners and the city police are
listening, too. Maybe a driver will
get a rude awakening some morn-
ing when he comes down North-
cliffat 7:30 a.m. and the police are
waiting to hand him a big fat fine.
Or maybe he'll act responsibly and
courteously and get his muffler
fixed!
