Canal 5 between Aug. Simpson to close recreation area at M ason Lake By NATALIE JOHNSON The Simpson Timber Company has announced that it will close and explore options to sell its rec- reation area at Mason Lake. Simpson provided a question and answer sheet to users of the park. "We know many employees and families have enjoyed using the park. We also are proud of how em- ployees have cared for the park," the sheet stated. "However, as part of our commitment to focusing on our core business, we had to ac- knowledge that park management is not where we should direct our resources right now." The release stated that the costs of running the park are a factor in the decision to sell it. "Many. of the year-round costs are behind-the-scenes expenses such as well permits, compliance with shoreline management regu- lations, septic systems, security, maintenance, insurance and taxes. These factors of park management distract us from our business focus on manufacturing excellence," the release states. If Simpson charged user fees to offset the costs, they would likely be prohibitive, the release states. "The additional income would help cover costs. However, user fees would have to be unfavorably expensive for a few months of use to support the year-round expens- es." Under Simps0n's ownership, the park has been open to Simpson employees, but not members of the general public. Simpson does not anticipate any changes in access or owner- ship through this summer, and will continue to honor reservations throughout its ownership of the park. Simpson staff members are working with prospective buyers and are marketing the property. "We realize the park has many attractive features. It is our hope that the property could be dedicat- ed to recreational use in the long term," the release states. Representatives from Simpson did not return a request for com- ment.
