Shelton-Mason County Journal e One-year interim coach plans to maintain team playbook By EMILY HANSON emily@masoncounr~,.eom Last fall, the Mary M. Knight football team made school history by reaching the playoffs. This year, the Knight Owls are hoping to repeat that success. Head coach Mike Evans -- a major piece of last season's success -- is not overseeing the program this year. "Mike took on the job of Mason Cgunty 911 director," interim head coach John Schultz said. "He won't have time this year. but by next year, he believes he'll have time." Schultz, also the MMK athletic director. is assisted by Steve Powell, Tyler Thomp- son. Jacob Iverson. Joel Thompson, Rob Buchanan and Evans. when his schedule allows it. This is Schultz's 32nd year coaching football. The 2010 season was the last sea- son in which he coached. That fall, Schultz finished his 22nd year as the head coach at° Centralia High School. Schultz said he has no plans to change the team from its current offensive eight- man wing-T system or its system of mul- tiple defensive fronts. Both systems were instrumental in the Knight Owls' 7-2 record and 1B District IV second place finish. "Last season, the main triumph was the team believing in themselves and their teammates," Schultz said. He named the team's losses to Kingsway and Neah Bay as its main defeats. "The guys are excited about being back together," Schultz said. "They're playing hard and it's going to be an exciting year." Nearly the entire lineup from last fall has returned, with eight returning seniors, including quarterback Kyle Willey. Willey is joined by fellow seniors Mason Cloud. J.J. Pals. During the annual Red vs. Black Scrim- mage at Highclimber Stadium, football play- ers young and old took the chance to show off their skills. "It went well," Shelton head coach Matt Hinkle said. "It was an opportunity for all of the kids to get some Friday night exposure. It was fun." Shelton varsity quarterback senior Jared Welander said the Highclimbers looked good during the scrimmages. "Our offense was doing really good getting offthe ball and running hard," Welander said. "They did their jobs perfectly." The Shelton Kings, the youth football league, joined the high school teams on the field for the scrimmages. Though the scrimmages did not quite last "Everyone's been teat committed and we're looking forward to a good season." "Tumwater has a lot of tradition," Hinkle said. "They've graduated a lot of kids, but they've been rock solid for years." To prepare for Tumwater is difficult, he said. "They run a wing-T offense, which is tough to practice against because it's built on misdi- rection and timing," Hinkie said. "It's difficult to simulate that in practice." Welander said the offensive unit has re- sponded well to the new run offense with play action system this season. Knight volleyball team has picked up where it left Off last sea- son. "We have only one freshman and one senior, so we're real young with two-thirds of the team be- ing sophomores," head coach Kitty Brehmeyer said. "But we started prac- tice basically where we left off last year. I think they're ready to be challenged." The Lady Owls finished 6-10 last fall and made it to the first round of the 1B District IV playoffs. "I think our main tri- umph was that we had a lot of five-game matches," Brehmeyer said. "We held our own, we just didn't come out on top." Now in her 17th year coaching the Lady Owls, Brehmeyer is assisted this year by Tiki Willey.
