As the Shelton Highclimbers
prepare for their season opener
against the Elma Eagles on
September 11, Head Coach Jack
Stark feels that the team is
further along than they were at
this time last season.
He said it is hard to predict
how this year's team will fare,
because the highclimbers are
going into an entirely different
league.
The coaches named the
players that looked good in
practice the past week. Ron Ellis
has a fine bunch of linebackers
going for the starting positions.
Returning lettermen at
linebacker, brothers Paul and
Mark Wittenberg, look strong, and
are being pushed by sophomore
Ace LeGault, senior Bob Martin,
and senior Cary Settle. Martin is a
transfer, Settle. was moved to
linebacker from defensive tackle,
and LeGault has experience at the
position from last year's freshman
team.
Paul Johansson said Don
Neth and Dave Myer doing well at
defensive end. They are both
returning starters from last
season, Neth a junior and Myer a
senior. They are being challenged
for the top spots by juniors Tom
Brigham and Shane Brooks. Settle
was also mentioned by Johansson
as a standout at offensive tackle.
Four lettermen hold the top
positions in the defensive
backfield, coached by Bill
Brickert. The only returning
starter in the secondary is junior
Tracy Armstrong, but three others
lettered in the backfield. Seniors
AI McGee and Gary Burger, and
junior Neal White are those
players. These four are also being
pushed by several other hopefuls.
At the guard positions, coach
Mike Sims says junior Mark
Wittenberg and Dave Myer look
solid. He also feels that soph Brad
Oling is doing well at the spar
defensive tackle spot, and that
junior Bill Gray, a returning
starter, looks like the man at the
stunt defensive tackle.
Stark named Neal White as
the current Red team
quarterback, or first unit leader.
He is a returning letterman and
has some varsity experience at the
spot. He had the best pass
completion percentage on the
team last season as a sophomore.
Doll .~h is Stark's returning
[~ilback~.halfback, he said
q~racy ~ng and A1 McGee
~re fH:st team at this time.
Sophomores Bob Crume and Ace
LeGault are also going for a
halfback job, and sophs Terry
Knight and Ray Krumpols are
backing up White at quarterback.
Senior David Stole is a
returning letterman and will
probably start at center for the
Climbers.
Stark also commented on
manager Chuck Carey. Carey took
a trainer's course during the
summer and is a help with minor
injuries. Stark said he was doing a
very good job.
Twenty-five sophomores are
out for the team, prompting the
school to get some special games
solely for the sophs. Attempts are
now being made to schedule at
least two sophomore games.
