in erga sslgnmen Kindergarten and First Grade students should report at the time and place indicated. In order that the child's introduction to school will be pleasant and as painless as possible each class has been divided into small groups for the first day in first grade, and for the first and second days for kindergarten pupils, school officials said. Due to an overload of kindergarten students in the Hillcrest area, all kindergarten students living east of Highway lOl (East Hillcrest) will be bussed to the Evergreen School where they will attend the session taught by Mrs. Thacher from !0:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Bus transportation will be provided for this group to and from the Evergreen School. Business To Commissioner of Indian Affairs Lores R. Bruce said this week that creation of Indian-owned small business enterprises on and near reservation communities will receive ''significant encouragement" as the result of a hewly created Indian Development Fund. The Fund will provide financial grants for Indian small businesses. Bruce said further: "I am sure that many Indian businessmen and women, and many who wish to start businesses of their own, will find this new source of aid an important part of their bootstrap efforts. It will also provide indirect help to Indian communities that presently are suffering from lack of sufficient business enterprises to generate a good ec(monlic base." The Indian Development Fund is administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and is operating under a $3.4 million appropriation for fiscal year 1971. It is designed to provide "seed money" grants to indian tribal members in need of a financial boost to open or expand business enterprises serving their local areas. The grants will provide cash equity for Indians having less than sufficient ,'quity t¢~ ou:dify them for small business loans from either public or private sources. 3 ~ h, used J . ., i; , rll ' ]~ ~ .i II SS grants-in ,a d ![o111 g~)vernnlcnt ;,~,,',~,'ies or loundatirms, and to I,,~illt 'J) arnw' atO0 per cvnt financing for thebusiness venture. Most Program lndians have found it difficult to take advantage of even the 90 per cent loan guarantee programs of the Small Business Administration, because most private lenders have required lO0 per cent guarantee for lndian loans. The Indian Development Fund grant may now be used to make up the difference for this and similar types of financing. The Fund will be used only when all other customary sources of adequate funding are unavailable to the Indian or Indian group seeking financing, according to Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior Orme Lewis, Jr., who helped engineer the plan. Basic criteria for grants under the Indian Development Fund are these: I. Ownership or proposed ownership exclusively by an Indian individual or group of Indians; 2. Location on or near a reservation or Alaskan Native village; 3. Profit-making or self-sustaining enterprise, or having the potential of being profit-making or self-sustaining within the total cost of expanding or establishing. bulk of the current appropriation for the Fund has been allocated on a reservation-by-reservation basis, with each allocation determined by such factors as economic development needs, existing local fin:racing capacity, population, al,,, succcs~ potential for various forms of development. Shots For Measles Are Being Sugg An ounce ()f prevention is worth a pound of cure, according to T. (" tlaliburton's"Wise Saws", published in 1843. Washington State health officials would say he's right, even today, if parents will think of immunization against communicable diseases as being that ounce of prevention. Outbreaks of measles last spring (596 cases) and diphtheria (10 cases) demonstrate the need for continued attention to childhood immunizations, that ounce of prevention which may save medical bills for the family, loss of school time, mental and physical damage in children even death. Surveys taken in the communities most severely affected this spring indicate that between 12 per cent and 20 per cent of school age children are still susceptible to measles. How many other communities have this many susceptible children is not known. Over 90 per cent of the measles cases occurred in children who had not been vaccinated against measles. Measles can be a severe disease in children, particularly those under 3 years of age; but it is rarely fatal. Diphtheria, on the other hand, is usually a sever disease and may be fatal in 5-10 per cent of the cases. There was one death among the 10 cases this year. • Parents should be aware that the child's risk of exposure to disease is much greater when he enters school. The close living conditions there provide an ideal environment for the transmission of communicable diseases. Health authorities ask, doesn't it make sense to give your child that ounce of prevention before exposing him to the risk of a serious disease? Be sure all immunizations are up to date! Every child should be immunized against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, and measles. Questions about other vaccinations should be discussed with the family physician or the local health department. Lack of money is no bar to immunization because all of these immunizations are available through the local health department. There is still time to protect children before the season of greatest risk arrives - late autumn, winter and spring. Immunize Now! The happy do not believe in miracles.
