Evolution of RailroadAvenue
A cutline on the History at a Glance photo collage on page A-12 of the Aug.
27 edition of the- Shelton-Mason County Journal incorrectly identified a
photo. The correct versions are:
Top: West Railroad Avenue from about Fifth Street is shown in 1948 dur-
ing removal of the railroad tracks, the roundhouse and the railroad shops.
Lumbermen’s Mercantile warehouse, on the left, was demolished in 1955,
and the shopping center known as Evergreen Square was built on the site
in 1956. Above: Photographer Dean Palmer took this photo of the new
shopping center from the roof of the Tradewell grocery store, now the site

hours Saturday due to a two-car col-
lision that left both cars totaled and
both drivers injured enough they
needed to be transported to separate
hospitals.
About 12:40 p.m., a 2006 Ford
Ranger pickup driven by 85-year-old
Longview resident Jason L. Hurd was
westbound on Agate Road, approach-
ing Route 3, and a 1991 Toyota Camry
four-door, driven by 23-year-old Shel-
ton resident Cameron J. Smith was
‘northbound on Route 3 approaching
Agate Road, when Hurd failed to yield
the right of way and pulled in front of
Smith.
Hurd and Smith’s Cars collided in
the northbound lanes.
Ijlo drugs or alcohol were involved,
according to authorities.
Washington State Patrol troopers
were joined by fire and aid cars to tend
to those involved. WSP Trooper and
District 8 'Public Information Officer
Chelsea Hodgson tweeted at 1:14 pm.
that state Route 3 at Agate Road was
“fully blocked.”
Hurd, who was wearing his seat-
. belt, was transported by aid car to St.
Michael Medical Center in Bremerton,
while Hodgson tweeted at 1:45 pm.
that Smith, who hadn’t worn his seat-
belt, was being airlifted “with serious
injuries,” from Mason General Hospi-
tal to Harborview Medical Center in
Seattle.
The on-call stafl' at St. Michael
Medical Center informed the Shelton-
Mason County Journal ' that, Hurd
was stabilized and transferred to Ta-
coma General Hospital, while Susan
