KIDS” MESSAGE
by Theresa Murray
theresa@masoncounty.com
“God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called
the children of God.” Matthew 5:9 NLT ’
Wherever Jesus went, large crowds followed Him. He taught
about the Kingdom of God, and the endless love, mercy and
grace of His father.
- He also taught how we are to live, if we follow Him. He didn’t
just teach us, He showed by example!
In Matthew 5, He is teaching what are referred to as the
‘beatitudes’. Do you know what a beatitude is? It is a ‘supreme
blessing.’ He mentioned eight of them. This was #7. If we
work for peace, we will be called the children of God!
I want to be called a child of God! Don’t YOU? So what else do
we have to do to BE a child of God?
Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that the Holy Spirit produces this
kind of behavior in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentlenes, and self-control.
These are ‘fruits of the Spirit’. This is the way we need to live
if we want to be children of God and inherit the kingdom of
Heaven.
But, when we follow the desires of our sinful nature, we
live a very different way. We quarrel, we are jealous, we
have outbursts of anger, we are hostile, selfish, are divided,
envious—there is a whole list of stuff in verses 19-21 that tell
us anvone living like that will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God.

Good News!
We need to get rid of all bitterness, rage, harsh words, and
slander (gossiping in a mean way), as well as ALL types
of evil behavior. Jesus wants us to be kind to each other,
tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through
Christ has forgiven us! Ephesians 4:31-32
Sometimes that is really hardll Sometimes it’s not easy to
forgive someone who is mean to you, or hurts you-especially
if they don’t think they did anything wrong!
I try to remember, when Jesus was hanging on the cross, He
looked at everyone who had tortured Him, and nailed Him
there—everyone who was mocking Him and spitting on Him,
making fun of Him— and He said, “Father, forgive them, for
they know not what they do.”
Have you ever done something that you didn’t even know
hurt someone else’s feelings? Or have you accused someone
of something they didn’t do? We are all guilty of that! Well,
the fifth beatitude (blessing!) is God blesses those who are
merciful, for they will be shown mercy. If we forgive others,
we will be forgiven! If we help another in need, someday we
may need help, and it will be there!
What if someone has a different opinion than you do? It’s okay
if we don’t all think the same way! We don’t have to be mean
to each other! Working for peace does not mean we let people
bully us, but we do not want to fight with them either. We
might not know what they are going through, and they might
not know how to deal with it. So many times I have been
able to make friends with people who were mean to me just
because I cared about them. Just because I had compassion
for what they were going through, and prayed for them. But it
hasn’t always worked out that way. It didn’t for Jesus either.
Not everyone will appreciate when we show ‘fruits of the
Spirit.’ Sometimes it makes people mad, because they don’t
want to be patient and loving and kind. We have to love them
anyway, even when we don’t want to, because Jesus does.
But, those are the times, we can tell Jesus, “I am really mad!
But I don’t want to hate and be mean, because You love all of
us, even when we are fighting. So help us all be blessed!”
You know, it actually takes more strength to be a person who
works for peace. Don’t feel like you are being weak! And,
if you ever do feel discouraged, like nobody notices you are
trying to be like Jesus, remember Beatitude #6, God blesses
those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
Be a soldier of peace!
