North Mason sees spike in medical airlifts

North Mason Regional Fire Au-
thority has seen a sharp rise in emer-
gency calls since June that is “sub-
stantially” higher than previous sum-
mers.
“Summer months are typically our
busiest,” said Lacey Newman, emer-
gency prevention specialist for North
Mason Regional Fire Authority. “This

year there’s been a lot more sub-
stantial traumatic injuries on the
road and on the trails —— a lot of these
need critical interventiOns.”
According to North Mason Region-
al Fire Authority EMS Captain Carl
Ehresman, AirLift Northwest trans-
ports have doubled and there’s been
a 6% increase in emergency call vol-
umes this summer.
Since June, the rise in emergency
calls has predominantly been related
to vehicle accidents, Newman said.
Some of these calls are major ac-
cidents that require mutual aid from
neighboring Kitsap or Mason County
units.
“There are so many hands involved
when it comes to extricating someone
from the vehicle,” Newman said.
According to the state Department
of Health “speed-related deaths hap-
pen most frequently on rural roads.”

on ATVs (all terrain vehicles) doing
normal recreational activities, but we
have a feeling people are a lot more
eager to get out and go have fun,”
