t Site still toxic after all these year A site in Hoodsport is off the ., dicate that the toxic list, but questions hang over a site in Grapeview after 14 years of scrutiny, the good news there being that an empty store does not pose a threat to people in the area. That's the gist of an announce- ment from the Washington De- partment of Ecology about places tat need some cleaning up. State officials have added nearly 50 properties in 22 counties to its list of hazardous sites targeted for cleanup. A site identified as the Storey property in Hoodsport is off the list after state officials concluded the site has been cleaned up. "The property owner for the Storey property stood up and said, 'I will clean up the site.' We were satis- fied that the property was cleaned up," said Cu Hart of the Depart- ment of Ecology. The situation at the now-de- funct Grapeview Country Store is somewhat more murky at this time. Hart said :it has been a gen- eral store, post office and gasoline station located less than a half mile due east of salt water and the fueling operations there ceased in 2004. A REPORT ON file with the Department of Ecology indicates that three fuel tanks were removed from the site in March 1993 by a contractor out of Chehalis. "Dur- ing excavation there was a strong odor of gasoline. There was a pret- ty high concentration of gas fumes in the area," Hart said, reading from the state's Tank Closure As- sessment Report. The report states that the tanks THE EMPTY SHELL of Grapeview Country Store is reflected in the glaze of glass covering the face of a defunct fuel pump. The store has been closed since 2004, but the site remains on the state's list of toxic sites that need cleaning up because a state report indicates there is evidence dating back to 1993 of a fuel spill there. were hauled to Tumwater for recy- cling, and after tests of" soil sam- pies confirmed contamination, 350 cubic yards of soil were excavated and takela to the Kitsap County Landfill. "The good thing was that groundwater was not encountered during excavation," itart said. "In this area shallow aquifers are pretty common." A contractor took soil and groundwater samples in Febru- ary 2001, and tests of one of the groundwater samples showed the presence of gasoline and chemicals associated with motor fuel. Three groundwater monitoring wells were installed, and one of them produced a sample that exceeded state standards. State records in- by Five Star limited liability Belfair.
