catches a 35-yard touchdown pass from senior
quarterback Jared Welander Friday.
Fifteen minutes before kickoff, the
line for tickets snaked around the cor-
ner of the sidewalk at Highclimber Sta-
dium.
On Friday, the stands were packed
and the front gate ran out of copies of
the roster.
Anticipation was high i~or the High-
climbers' season-opening home football
game against Tumwater.
With help from senior running back
Ralph Kinne's strong offensive effort,
head coach Matt Hinkle and his 2012
team did not disappoint as they routed
the T-Birds 42-21:
Kinne led the offense with 31 carries
for 328 yards while Bell made 10 carries
for 118 yards.
"This was a good first test," Hinkle
told the team after its victory. "Tumwa-
ter was ranked fifth in the state. They
won't be fifth anymore."
The T-Birds' defense had no answer
for Shelton's running game. On 47 car-
ries, the Highclimbers ran 476 yards
while Shelton's defense held Tumwater
to 124 rushing yards on 33 carries.
Tumwater opened the game with the
starting kickoff, but Shelton held them
back from scoring.
Shelton's first drive was surpris-
ing. On first down, the T-Birds defense
stopped action near the line of scrim-
mage. On second down, the Highclimb-
ers received a false start penalty. On
the repeated second down, Shelton
fumbled. But on third down, Kinne
broke away from the Tumwater de-
fense for an 80-yard touchdown with
9:22 left in the first quarter. Senior
running back Shelby Salisbury made
the PAT to give the Highclimbers a 7-0
advantage.

a 50-yard touchdown
with 7:22 left in the first quarter. Salis-

posts.
Tumwater scored again near the end
of the first quarter with a 6-yard touch-
down run from Brown and another good
PAT, sending the teams into the second
quarter tied at 14.
"We know we've got an experienced
bunch of kids and they put in a lot of
off-season preparation," Hinkle said.
"We're real proud of that and their focus
and ability to take advantage of oppor-
tunities as they presented themselves
(Friday night)."
The Highclimbers scored once in the
second quarter, on a 35-yard touchdown
pass from senior quarterback Jared
Welander to junior wide receiver Jesse
Danford with 9:37 left in the half.
"I thought we did what we had to do,"
Kinne said. "We were strong the whole
time, executed every play and played to
our potential."
The Highclimbers came back from
halftime and exploded in the third
quarter.
Bell scored a 30-yard touchdown
with 7:34 left in the quarter, then
Kinne scored a 30-yard TD with 4:06

Shelton volleyball
begins league
play tonight

Serving, diving and set-
ting are some of the skills
the Shelton volleyball team
got the chance to work on at
the Centralia Jamboree last
weekend.
On Saturday, the Lady
Climbers won five of six
matches during the day-
long tournament.
"It was a good time,"
head coach Steve Beck said.
"It was a good warm-up for
us. We'll see harder teams
(this season), but we played
well."
The team faced River
Ridge on the courts first
and came out on top 25-21,
25-20. Next, Shelton played
against Rochester and won
25-11, 25-18. Finally, the
Lady Highclimbers split
with Centralia 25-19, 22-
25.
,I really liked the team
attitude and focus," Beck
said. "You don't expect per-
fect executionat the begin-
ning of the season so atti-
tude and focus are impor-
tant."
Natalie Andrewski led
the team in serves, hitting
the ball hard and tough all
day, the coach said.
"As the day went on,
Natalie picked up on pass-
ing and defense," Beck said.
"Georgette Luglia was a
surprise on Saturday with
her blocking and hitting
confidence."
He said lone senior
Courtney Hanson was a
solid player in all aspects of
the game during the jambo-
ree.
"Our setting is still an
element that needs work,"
Beck said, "We need to get
the ball in Courtney's hands
to hit more often. We need
a little more sophistication
with our offense."
Beck said that just like
last season, the team is still
not as tall as some of the op-
ponents it'll face off against.
"Centralia outsized us at
the net, but we lined up fair
with the other two teams,"
he said. "Height is still a
challenge for us, so we need
to work on our setting and
defense."
Shelton begins league
play at 5:30 p.m, tonight at
North Thurston.
"North Thurston has five
