NO mere loggers, th
The promise of the 1978
Shclton Highclimber
cross-country team does not tide
solely on the heels of its 11
returning letter winners.
Of course, even a team man
the likes of Climber Coach Pete
Janda admits such a foundation
can't hurt.
With the season-opening
jamboree still a week away and
practice about to enter its third
week of relatively easy distance
work, the Climbers already
number a record 22 fellas and
ten girls.
And talk about veterans: For
tile distaff team there's senior
Frances Nelson, a two-time state
cross-country competitor (36th
and 46th her freshman .and
sophomore years, respectively),
leading the way. Frances also
went to state as a miler last
spring and registered a school
record 5:26.2, good for seventh
place.
Sophomore Paula Mueller,
last year's number-two Climber
gal and school record holder in
tile 880, is expected to give
Nelson everything she can handle
this fall.
Other letter winners back for
the girls/this year are senior
Ginny Wood and juniors Shelly
TruckseSs and Meg Walker. Out
for the first time is junior Pat
Eichinger. Sophomores Cindy
Clayton and Debbie Bostrom
bring track experience, as does
fresh standout June Clayton.
An eighth grader will be
competing with the team this
year, by virtue of her rather
auspicious talents. Cindy
Baldwin, district 880 winner last
season, aheady has logged a
couple marathons.
Returning letter winners for
the guys are seniors Bill BASES,
Lloyd German and Eric Valley
and juniors Jeff Likes, Steve
Robinson and Dale Johnson.
Likes was the Climbers'
number one harrier last year,
when Shelton went 7-4 in league
and copped third in district and
ninth in state. He was second at
district and 27th overall at state,
and last spring he shattered the
school's long standing two-mile
mark in track with a blistering
9:44 and went on to take 12th
in state.
Boggs, the only three-year
letterman and three-time state
competitor, and Robinson, a
standout hurdler in the spring
and 33rd place finisher in last
year's state cross-country meet,
both have been working out over
the summer and could be among
the best in the Black Hills, says
their coach.
Johnson and German both
competed at state last fall and
enjoyed good track seasons as
well, while letter winner Valley,
holder of several Highclimber
records as a swimmer, hopes to
benefit from his summer of
intense pool workouts.
Other Climbers are senior
transfer Mark Price; juniors Bob
Dally, Ivan Thorsos, John
Coulon, Rob Whitten, Kenny
Frazier and Rob Watson;
Paula Mueller
(
Eric Valley
Frances Nelson :
Steve Robinson
Ginny Wood
sophomores Jan German,
Gordon Baldwin, Roger Murray,
Steve Hinck and Lars Jenner;
and freshmen Shawn Buechel,
Tom Howe, Jimmy Dean and
Mike Coulon.
The team also expects to sign
on Sheryal Balding as assistant
coach soon, as per an agreement
with the school district whereby
the position would be added if
the team drew at least ten girls
and numbered no fewer than 31
altogether.
The only real loss suffered
by the varsity, other than 1978
graduate Brian Willis, is in person
of letter winner Mike Clayton,
who moved to Arizona this
summer.
Although he's making no
solid predictions, Coach Janda
figures his runners to be highly
competitive this year. "We have
probably as much talent this
season as we had the last two
combined," he says. "But, of
course, talent means nothing
unless you're willing to pay the
price in hard work."
Janda hastens to point out
that last year's team was hardly
a pushover. In fact, the
combined point deficit in three
of its four league losses was just
two points.
"We lost to Yehn by one
point and to Hoquiam by one
point," explains the coach, "and
then we lost to Centralia because
its top runner finished "ahead of
ours - despite the fact that the
teams finished in a tie."
Although there hasn't been
any hard running or interval
work as yet, Janda likes what he
sees in his young crew this year.
"They're a very coachable
group," he says. "And, especially
important, they all seem to have
come back in better shape."
