Knight loses his damsel A would-be knight in armor phoned tile sheriff's office early last week to report tliat he could not locate his damsel in distress. The motorist told sheriff's dispatchers that he was driving westbound on the South Shore Road Wednesday evening when he saw a woman running along the road in apparent distress. She appeared to be wearing only panties, he said, and he thought he saw her trip and fall over an embankment. When he stopped his car, he could not find her, however. A short time later, a woman phoned tile sheriff's office and stated that she had sent the helpful gentleman on his way. Her daughter had merely been jogging along the road in a beige top and white jogging shorts and had returned home safely, she said. HEATER TAKEN FROM PARK A Mason Lake man reported to the sheriff's office that a heater had been ripped off the wall and taken from the Mason County Park bathhouse. HUCKLEBERRY HAROLD Huckleberry Harold, our purple-visaged oracle whose mail has been of overwhelming volume lately, spent the last couple of weeks scraping the Model Litter Control Act decal off his mailbox and now the deluge has slowed to the usual trickle of misdelivered delinquent notices and catalogues of whoopee cushions and plastic truck upholstery. Amidst it all, however, were the following poignant bits. Dear Huckleberry Harold, I've been told that rose hip tea is very healthful. Can I dry my own rose hips? Can I use wild ones as well as domestic hips? When will they be red like the ones in the health food stores? Vitamin C Freak Dear Vitamin, You can dry your own rose hips and the wild ones are preferable to most hybrid garden varieties. Wait until they are nicely orange-colored, in a month or so; be sure to pick in an area that has not been sprayed (and don't trespass!). If you are picking for wine (vitamins with a kick?) the purists advise waiting until just after the first frost. FOUND THEM!! To go with you and advise you personally on this matter, 1'11 meet you Saturday morning at 9 in front of Thriftway; 1'11 be the one carrying the big basket. Dear Huckleberry Harold, Several years ago I made quite a lot of wine from Island Belle grapes. It was pretty awful, but I heard that storing it to mellow and age would help. By now it is very clear and smooth and I think it tastes pretty good but I need to talk to an expert about bottling and serving it. To whom should I turn? Vintner Dear Vint, Right! Saturday morning is booked, but how about Saturday evening at seven. I'll meet you in front of Thriftway; I'll be the one with the loaf of bread and the big thermos bottle. Dear Huckleberry Harold, I've been reading about wild mushrooms and realize that I should talk to someone who knows mushrooms before I go sampling. On a recent hike, however, I found a big patch of what I think are chantarelles, and I am dying to try them. They are a pale golden color with shallow gills that travel up the stem and they look just like the pictures in the books. I'm told there is little I could confuse them with; can I go ahead and try them? Would-be Mycologist Dear Would, Oh, heavens, no, Wait and talk to an expert, but in the meantime DO NOT TELL ANYONE WHERE YOU Jolley family holds reunion Cloudy skies and rain showers did not dampen the spirits of 110 participants in the recent Jolley family reunion August 12 and 13 at the Allyn home of Frank and Martha Jolley. "It was lawn to lawn sleeping bags," Mrs. Jolley laughed. Many of the participating family members and friends brought trailers and campers, she said. Youngsters swam and fished from Allyn dock just down the hill from the Jolleys' home and their elders danced on the cement patio 'til early Sunday. Frank Jolley was born in Yelm. Most of his family is in the northwest; family members came from such places as Twisp, Colville and Salem. Mr. Jolley's sister, 83-year-old Goldie Hammersmith, came from Mount Angel, Oregon.
