Sept. 2.

The Highclimbers' lone
touchdown midway through
the fourth quarter on Fri-
day, Sept. 2, allowed the
team to escape a home field
shut out against the North
Thurston Rams during the
season opener.
"The game was disap-
pointing," head coach Matt
Hinkle said. "I thought
North Thurston had some
kids we weren't able to
match yet. Their strengths
are areas we need work
in."
Shelton's only touch-
down in their 69-6 loss to
North Thurston came from
junior running back De-
Shon Bell with just 7:51 left
in the game.
"The touchdown showed
that when we're down, we
can keep fighting, even if
there's no way we can win,"
Bell said. "We can he pride-
ful and keep playing hard."
Prior to Bell's scoring
run, the Rams had already
scored 62 points. The first
touchdown was a pass from
senior quarterback Ben
Broeker to senior wide re-
ceiver PK Machado with
2:54 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter,
Broeker threw to Machado
for another TD with 9:31
left in the half. The Rams
next scored on a pass from
Broeker to senior wide re-
ceiver Landon Rushton
with 8:05 left in the half.
The next Ram TD was
an 87-yard run with 5:38
left in the half followed by
a Broeker to sophomore
tight end Josh Cahill 55-
yard TD pass with 4:16 left.
The Rains scored again in
the first half with an inter-
ception of Shelton's junior
quarterback Jared We-
lander by North Thurston
sophomore defensive back
Hayden Maliska with 1:41
left.
North Thurston started
the second half with an
85-yard touchdown by ju-
nior running back Brandon
Belisario with 10:46 left in
the third quarter.
The Rams scored again
with 1:57 left in the third
quarter and again with
8:39 left in the game. The
final Ram
TD came
with 4:15
left in the
game.

and played well defensive-
ly, Joe Strand had an inter-
ception and played well de-
fensively and Ralph Kinne
made a lot of good kick off
returns."
Bell said he felt the team
didn't play to its full poten-
tial.
"We have o get over the
mental barrier to play even
when we're down," he add-
ed. "We weren't quite men-
tally prepared for it."
Bell led the Highclimbers
in rushing vith 88 yards on
three carries while senior
quarterback Nic Gove had
52 yards on four carries and
junior runningback Thom-
as Gettle added 33 yards on
13 carries.
Gove completed six of 13
passes for 53 yards. Senior
wide receiver Dylan Helser
hauled in one pass for 19
yards while junior running
back Ralph Kinne caught
one pass for 12 yards.
The Highclimbers are
now preparing for their
first away game, they will
play Black Hills on Friday,
Sept. 9.
Black Hills lost 60-7
against Montesano last Fri-
day.
"Black Hills is in the
same situation we are: look-
ing to rebound off of a loss,"
Hinkle said.
Bell said the Wolves lost
pretty bad, so the tIigh-
climbers are expecting
them to come out and really
want to win this Friday.
"Even after a big loss,
expect a good season out of
Shelton football," Bell said.
"We're getting better every
week."

"Oakville has a brand
new coach, so we're not
sure what to expect," Ev-

they did last year, but a
new coach can bring any
kind of changes."

The North Mason
football team was un-
able to find the end
zone during its 44-0 loss
at CenturyLink Field
against the W.F. West
Bearcats on Saturday,
Sept. 3
"We don't put a whole
lot of emphasis on any
one game so we'll use
this as a measuring
stick for future games,"
head coach Jeff Bevers
said. "We got a lot of
work to do."
Junior quarterback
Tommy Renne said he
thought the Bulldog
defense was pretty
scrappy but the team
needs to pick it up on
offense.
"I'm sure being here
had an affect on the
mental aspect of our
game," Renne said. "But
there's no excuse for a
performance like that."
Renne led the Bull-
dogs in rushing with
63 yards on 11 carries
while junior fullback
Brody Stromberg and
sophomore fullback
Tommy Marsh each con-
tributed seven yards,
Stromberg on four car-
ries and Marsh on two
carries.
Renne attempted
three passes with none
complete and had two
interceptions.
The Bearcats scored
on a pass from senior
quarterback Mitch
Gueller to senior wide
receiver Joseph Rothlin
with 6:25 left in the first
quarter and on a pass
from Gueller to senior
runningback Colton
Watson with 2:13 left in
the first quarter.

"Washington is expected
to win the 2A league over
there," Bevers said. "They
are tough, scrappy and

to prepare for them like any
other team. We're going to
