The Shelton High School
cross country team is train-
ing hard for its first meet.
"The team is working re-
ally hard," said head coach
Daryl White. "We have
more depth on the boys'
team than I expected and
they're in better shape than
I thought. The girls are
working really hard too and
some of them trained over
the summer."
The team is training for
its first meet, which will be
at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday,
Sept. 10, at the Capital In-
viational in Olympia. Less
than a week later, the High-
climbers will host their only
home meet.
That meet is scheduled
to begin at 3:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, Sept. 14. The
girls' race will be run first,
followed by the junior var-
sity boys' race and the fin-
ishing with the varsity
boys' race on the roughly
2.5-mile course.
The Highclimbers will
be running against Central
Kitsap and Capital.
"We really don't have
what I consider to be a real-
ly nice course," White said.
"The Huff and Puff is nice

but the trails are narrow so
we can't host an invite here.
We're looking into finding
another course near Shel-
ton."
White said the Huff and
Puff trail is convenient for
the team, since the entrance
is near the high school.
However, the city has
modified the trail in recent
years.
"The course has been
changed so much that a
course record can't really
bet set," White said. "It's
hard to tell at this point
in the season what finish
times to expect."
White said Capital has
a really strong boys' and
girls' program, adding that
Central Kitsap is a strong
team, too.
"The boys' race could be
very competitive," he add-
ed. "It's early in the year, so
we'll learn a lot in the early
meets."
The boys' team, with 20
runners, will have a varsity
and a junior varsity team.
Though those teams have
not yet been selected, White
said boys' runners to watch
are: Nathan Morgan, re-
turning senior; Kyle Cloyd,
returning senior; Skylar
Core, returning senior and
boys' team captain; Zach
Taylor, returning junior;
Phelan Ryder, returning
sophomore; Cody William-
son, returning sophomore,
and Jonathan Andrewski,
returning junior.
He also named Logan
McGuire, a new senior
transfer runner, and Rob-
ert Wood, a returning ju-
nior who ran on varsity his
freshman season, as boys
who would be vying for var-
sity positions.
'As of last week, the girls'
team had seven runners,
enough to make only one
team. The girls are led by
Bonnie Casper, who is a
girls' team captain and re-
turning junior. The rest of
the team is made up of Kelli
Wilson, returning letter-
man; Lindsey Nicolas, re-
turning letterman and new
runners: Nairobi Zambra-
no, Katie Morgan, Delaney
Atkinson and Bayla Budge.
