Imag- ine the economic loss to Mason County if its airport, marina and industrial zone were gone! Jay Hupp is running for Shel- ton port commissioner. I believe that Jay has the background and experience to address these is- sues and a willingness to work with all of the parties to these issues. Jay's work with the Eco- nomic Development Council of Mason County, Mason County Planning Advisory Commis- sion, Mason County Broadband Communications Development Committee and Columbia-Pa- cific Resource Conservation and Economic Development District clearly demonstrates his ability to understand and resolve the port district's problems. Jay is a pilot and understands airport operations. And I also think that Jay understands that those who live near airport and industrial zones have concerns that need to be dealt with fairly and equitably. In Jay Hupp you will have a commissioner who is knowledgeable, experienced and up to the tasks he will ihce. I would also like to point out that Jay's opponent is a single-is- sue candidate. His only real inter- est is motor sports. While I wel- come motor sports at the airport, they are not the only nor even the most important issue facing the port district. Mason County needs commissioners who can deal with all of the needs of the port district and its neighbors. I am urging you to vote for Jay Hupp for port commissioner. Why was it L a big secret to the citizens here when they were meeting ,with the county commissioners and the city regarding the same? According to The Journal, Fire District 5 has met several times with the city tb continue their on- going discussions about their pro- posed consolidation, and yet not one word was written in the MBC newsletter. It appears to me that District 5 Chief Richard Knight's omission of information is the equivalent of a lie to the popula- tion. Is Chief Knight's omission a way for him to tell us that we shouldn't know what our fire dis- trict is doing? And yet, he expects us to vote for this in February. I for one would suggest that all the current Fire District 5 cover- age area, including Mason Lake, vote against such a merger if the chief cannot talk to us in person about what it would do for both Mason Lake and Benson Lake homeowners, as I believe we need to tell Chief Knight that we expect to be kept abreast of the news when given the opportunity to tell us. Now that the homeowners have been given the news of what the new valuations of their prop- erties are, the fire district could really profit from its timing of the merger. (This use of to justify the admin- political agenda, while not a new development in the his- tory of this or any other govern- ment, presents its own concerns.) I'm sure there's a clear expla- nation for the distinction between getting shot in the back of the head and getting shot in the front of the head, but until the Bush Administration cheerleaders and perpetual-war apologists point out why we're all just too dense to get it without their "help," I'll go on questioning the absurd things the administration keeps asking us to believe: like that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that necessitated the inva- sion, like that Iraq posed an im- minent threat to us justifying our unquestionablypreemptive strike, like that Saddam had anything to do ;/ith al-Qaida or 9/11, like that this isn't about oil or Middle East hegemony for some other geopo- litical reason that they just can't or won't be honest about, or that we have any business exporting "democracy" to Iraq. But there's more. According to a massive new ABC/BBC poll, ev- ery single Iraqi polled in the city of Baghdad, which is the primary target of the "surge," said that surge has made security worse, not better. In the entire poll, in- cluding Iraqis polled outside of Baghdad itself, 70 percent think the escalation worsened rather than improved security condi- tions. Thus, according to this in- dependent poll, Iraqis themselves overwhelmingly think the situ- ation in Iraq is deteriorating, in terms of security, political coop- eration, the economy and other measures. But there's even MORE! The government itself- although not the partisan administration who lied to us, changed their explana- tions and justifications more than once and got us into this fine mess - has found that violence in Iraq is up since the surge. A compre- hensive Government Accountabil- ity Office report ordered by Con- gress found that "average number of daily attacks against civilians have remained unchanged from February to July 2007." And in August, things actually got worse, with civilian casualties ris- ing, according to the Associated Press and The Los Angeles Times. Moreover, for our troops, it's the bloodiest summer yet; more U.S. troops died every month this year compared to the same month last year. So, according to the "Petraeus report," things are getting better since the surge. Of course that's only if you walk to work and don't get shot in the back of the head.
