He was an elementary-
teacher in Yelm from 1989
the past three years,
and his wife, Patty, a
kindergarten/preschool
lived in Kona, Hawaii,
where they opened a small trans-
portation-tour business.
Patty grew up in Yelm, a de-
scendant of the Longmire settler
family. After three years in Ha-
waii, both wanted to return to the
Northwest and Churchill wanted
to be in a small school district,
such as Hood Canal's. ''ou know
everybody. The parents look out
for the kids," he said. "It's more of
a nurturing environment."
BY CONTRAST, there were
some 12,000 students in the Sno-
homish district and he was one of
50 administrators. "You just didn't
have the connection with the fami-
lies and the kids," he said.
The Churchills now reside in
Union. "We're choosing to live in
the community so we can be in-
volved," he said. As a testament to
that, he has joined the local Lions
and Kiwanis clubs.
