Mason County Literacy is
seeking volunteers to tutor adult
students in Shelton, Belfair and
Hoodsport. Workshops on October
12-13 will focus on tutoring Eng-
lish to newcomers to the U.S. and
on October 19-20 the training will
be for people interested in tutoring
reading, writing or math to adult
learners.
Last year the nonprofit agency
served more than 200 adult stu-
dents. People participated in one-
on-one tutoring, studies toward the
general educational development
certificate, computer classes and
a program of English for speakers
of other languages. With the help
of volunteer tutors, participants
passed the GED, found new jobs,
earned promotions, went to col-
lege, used English in daily interac-
tions with neighbors and employ-
ers and gained computer skills.
Mason County Literacy is also
recruiting volunteers to assist in
childcare programs. Volunteers
from the community are essential
for the continued success of these
programs. The agency will host a
Volunteer Information Night from
5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sep-
tember 19, at 133 Railroad Avenue
in Shelton.

Fair on Thursday, October 18.
The event is free and will occur
from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the
Johnson Library on the cam-
pus at 937 West Alpine Way.
The tair is designed for those
who want to attend a Wash-
ington college or university, or
who are planning to transfer
to a college or university. For

Fall Awareness Day
September 20, 2-4pro in the Cedar Room at Alpine Way
Have you or someone you know fallen in the
last six months? Do you feel that your balance
has gotten worse? Are you a senior who is
living independently and who wants to remain
independent? This seminar, hosted by Alpine
Way and co-sponsored with Shelton Health and
Rehabilitation Center, will include a
• Physician presenting risk factors for falls
• Physical therapist explaining balance issues
• Pharmacist speaking on medications that may
increase the risk of falls |
• Exercise physiologist demonstrating exercises
to help prevent falls
Attendees can receive a free fall prevention screening, booklets and
videos, balance screening, and information on fall risk and prevention
techniques. There is no charge.
Veterans Benefits for
Assisted Living Residents
Are you (or your spouse) a veteran? If you (or
your spouse) served on active duty for at least
ninety days and if you served at least one day
during a period of war, you may qualify for
the "Aid and Attendance Benefit." Wartime
veterans may qualify for up to $1,801 monthly
and surviving spouses may receive up to $976
monthly. This program considers income but
your medical expenses (which include your
Alpine Way assisted living rent, Depends, etc.)
are deducted from your income. To get more
information, come to the informational meeting
September 24, 2007 at 6pm in the Cedar Room at Alpine Way.
