in connection to £he beating death
of Shawn Joseph Morrow, 23.
His sentencing has been sched-
uled for 9 a.m. on Oct. 4. A plea
agreemer6 between the Mason
County Prosecutor's office and
Churchill recommends a sentence
of 21 years and 9 months.
Judge James Dixon of Thurston
County accepted the guilty plea
after questioning Churchill briefly
about his plea.
Churchill and
Travis Carl Baze,
28, were both
charged with
first-degree mur-
der in connec-
tion with Mor-
row's death. The
Mason County
Stephan Prosecutor's Of-
Churchill rice charged them
with assault af-
ter both admitted
in taped confessions to taking part
in beating Morrow with a metal
baseball bat on March 26.
Morrow died of his injuries three
days later.
Churchill's trial was scheduled
to begin with jury selection on
Tuesday.
Baze was found guilty by a Ma-
son County Superior Court jury on
Sept. 5 of first-degree assault, first-
degree robbery and first-degree
murder, all with sentencing en-
hancements for the use of a deadly
.weapon. Prosecutors argued that
he was an accomplice in Morrow's
murder.
In a taped statement introduced
as evidence in the trial, Baze con-
fessed to driving Churchill to the
public fishing area on State Route
3 and watching him hit Morrow
several times with a metal baseball
bat.
Baze was convicted of helping
Churchill lure Morrow to the pub-
lic area with text messages arrang-
ing for Baze to sell Morrow heroin.
The jury convicted Baze of robbery
on the charge of stealing the money
Morrow brought to buy the drugs
after beating him.
Baze confessed to watching
Churchill beat Morrow, then driv-
ing him away from the scene of the
crime.
A taped statement in which
Churchill confessed to beating
Morrow in retaliation for burglar-
izing his house was also admitted
into evidence.
Mason County Prosecutor Mike
Dorcy said he also plans to charge
Jennifer Hansen with murder in
the near future for her involve-
ment in Morrow's death.
Hansen was Churchill's girl-
friend at the time of the incident.
According to evidence presented
by Dorcy in hearings for both
Churchill and Baze's trials, she
was involved in the process of lur-
ing Morrow to the public fishing
area on March 26, and she knew
about the beating before and after
it happened.
A statement from Hansen to Ma-
son County Sheriffs detectives led
them to arrest Baze and Churchill
on March 27.
