Mason County Cup fosters healthy rivalry
ast Friday was the inaugural
Mason County Cup, a football
contest between Shelton and
North Mason with a fancy trophy as
the prize.
Along with the Mason County Cup,
the two schools will compete against
each other this year for the Mason
County All-Sports Award. The award
will be presented to the school that
wins the most sporting contests be-
tween Shelton and North Mason this
school year. It will be given to the win-
ning school by the losing school's athlet-
ic director at the end-of-year assembly.
I think both of these awards are
great ideas. The awards will help foster
a healthy rivalry between the northern

and southern halves
of Mason County.
Hopefully, these
awards will increase
interest in the games
and will bring more
fans out to support
the two teams, re-
gardless of where the
games are being held.
I think this already
happened Friday
night: Phil Pugh Sta-
dium was packed with North Mason
fans on one sides and I've never seen
the away bleachers so full.
Here's hoping that level of enthu-
siasm toward Mason County athletes
will carry over into the North Mason at
Shelton volleyball match, scheduled for
6:30 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Shelton Mini
Dome and all other future contests be-
tween the schools this year.
By now, most of you know that Shel-
ton defeated North Mason in Friday
night's football game 54-24 (see page
-1) and I'm sure a great deal of you
know that North Mason:defeated Shel-
ton on Sept. 6 in girls' soccer 4-3. This
makes the two schools tied for the all-
sports award.
I, for one, am looking forward to see-
ing who comes out on top at the end of
this school year and whether or not the
losing school will rebound next year to
take the award.
