Lady Owls fall in season opener
MMK volleyball at
Wishkah tonight
By EMILY HANSON

Nerves and mistakes combined to lead
the Mary M. Knight volleyball team to a
loss in its season opener this week.
On Monday, the Lady Owls lost at homo
to Lake Quinault 25-23 25-16 and 25-23.
"They were nervous with it being their
first time out," head coach Kitty Brehmey-
er said. "There's not a lot of varsity experi-
ence because only two were on varsity last
year."
Brehmeyer said she thought the Lady
Owls (0-1) made too many errors to be able
to win.
"Communication was a lot of it, learning
the rotation and getting that gel," Brehm-
eyer said. "They have to get used to each
other. It'll come, they'll get stronger."
The match was good experience for the

team. she said, because
it's difficult to recreate
the intensity of a game in
practice.
One area Brehmeyer
thought the team played
well in was their first
pass on serve-receive.
"It went to the spot
we needed so our setter
could set," she said.

ly when calling out lines.
"They didn't get down
and they supported each other real well,
though," Brehmeyer said.
The team's season continues at 5:45
p.m. tonight at Wishkah.
"I think they'll play better than they did
tonight because they'll have time to reflect
and work on what they need to," Brehm-
eyer sai. "Individually, all the girls had
some good, shining moments."
At 5:45 p.m. on Monday, the Lady Owls
return home to play against Taholah.

and 13 in the third.
With 10:39 left in the
first half. senior running
back DeShon Bell scored
on a run from inside the
10-yard line. Senior kicker
Shelby Salisbury made the
PAT to increase Shelton's
lead to 15-6.
Kinne then scored an 80-
yard touchdown run with
7:55 left. Salisbury made
the PAT again and Shelton
pulled ahead to a 22-6 lead.
On the tbllowing kickoff,
North Mason fumbled and
Shelton senior defensive
back Jacob Frakes recov-
ered and scored with 7:47
left in the first half. Salis-
bury again sent the pigskin
sailing between the posts.
For the last Shelton first-
half touchdown, Welander
connected with Bell on a
53-yard pass with 4:36 left
in the second quarter. With
Salisbury's PAT attempt
blocked, Shelton's lead in-
creased to 35-6.
Though North Mason se-
nior running back Tommy
Renne scored on the follow-
ing kickoff, a block in the
back penalty on North Ma-
son recalled the touchdown
and sent the Bulldogs back
to their own 22-yard line.
From there, North Mason
worked' its way down the
field until sophomore quar-
terback Daniel Burggraaf
connected with senior run-
ning back Aaron North on
a 2-yard pass with no time
remaining on the clock. The
Bulldogs' two-point con-
version attempt failed and
Shelton went into the locker
room up 35-12.
"We played pretty well,"
Bell said about the first half.
"We came in overconfident
but we fixed it by the second
quarter."
The Climbers came back
from halftime to dominate
the third quarter. While
Kinne ran in another touch-
down with 8:21 left and se-
nior running back Thomas
Gettle scored on a run with
4:11 remaining in the quar-
ter. the Highclimbers' de-
fense shut the Bulldogs out.
Salisbury made one PAT in
the quarter and Shelton's
lead was 48-12 heading into
the final 12 minutes.
"We did pretty good at
stopping the dive play," Bell
said. "And we were awe-
some on offense."
At the start of the fi-
nal quarter, both teams
switched up their quarter-
backs. Senior Levi Rowland
took over for North Mason
while Shelton sent in junior
Colton Hubble.
Junior running back
Gordon Henry scored the
final Shelton touchdown
with 8:30 remaining to play.
Salisbury's kick failed.
The Highclimber defense
could not keep the Bulldogs
off the board in the final
quarter. Freshman quar-
terback Matt Becker scored
on a short, run with 4:15 left
in the game. The Bulldogs'
two-point conversion failed.
The Highclimbers fum-
bled the resulting kickoff,
giving possession back to
the Bulldogs.
With 3:04 left in the
game, North Mason fumbled
near the end zone, Shelton
recovered but dropped it
and North Mason junior of-
fensive lineman Kristian
Myrick scored.
"North Mason was a grit-
ty team," Bell said. "They
were very physical, weren't
afraid to hit and played with
a lot of heart."
Hinkle said he thought
the Highclimbers played
solidly in nearly all aspects
of the game.
"Effort was good, focus
was good and I was pleased
with the kids' ability to
come out of a slow start," he
said. "Kicking continues to
be a problem area and we'll
put an emphasis on that
this week. We need to have
a faster start and to reduce
the procedure penalities.
Some of those can be elimi-
nated."
Bell said he thought the
team needed to work on
coming out in the game ear-
lier.
"We need to pick up in-
tensity and keep it going,"
he said.
Shelton is set to begin
play in the 3A Narrows
League at 7 p.m. tomorrow
night at Highclimber Sta-
dium against Wilson (2-0).
"We've seen some film on
Wilson and they look pretty
good," Hinkle said. "The
quarterback throws the ball
well and they've got good
team speed. Historically,
they have a good program
and they're undefeated, so it
should be a good test."
Hinkle said the High-
climbers are ready to play
in the 3A.

hardly come as
a surprise that

quite edifying to learn, therefore,
that a recent study of teenagers
shows that those who took part in
more moderate-to-vigorous outdoor
activity reported better health and
social functioning than their more
sedentary counterparts who spent
hours watching TV or playing video
games. The most benefit came to
those who spent at least 2.5 more
hours outdoors playing sports or
engaging in high-intensity physical
activity than the least active. Our
