Lady Highclimbers lose first 2 games
Shelton girls'soccer home tonight
By EMILY HANSON
emily@masoncoun2yocom,
The Shelton girls' soccer team is still
adjusting and developing -- a fact that led
to the team losing its first two games of
the season.
On Sept. 4, the Lady Highclimbers lost
4-0 to River Ridge at home.
"It was 1-0 for the first 70 minutes and
then they scored three in 10 minutes,"
head coach Dan Deacon said.
He said the Lady Highclimbers had
four starting freshmen that he didn't ro-
tate and they got tired.
"I think that's what happened," he said.
On Sept. 6. Shelton lost at North Ma-
son 4-3.
"It was a couple of minor errors," Dea-
con said. "The girls were in the whole time
and they were excited. They played strong
and well."
He said the team was individually
better against River Ridge, but com-
bined to play a better game against
North Mason.
Freshman Jaymie Pentony scored the
first Shelton goal midway through the
first half. Shelton senior Alexis Johnson
scored toward the end of the first half.
In the second half, senior Katie Dean

scored the final Shelton
goal.
"I switched up posi-
tions a lot more in order
to make up for the lack of
strength in our freshman
team," Deacon said. "You
have to play to strengths
so I'm doing that more
often."
Deacon said that each
week, he's trying to find
an area of the game
where the team needs
more motivation.
"I do that by finding
an area of complacency and switching
people around," he said. "This week. we'll
focus on keepers."
In practice, Deacon has been doing con-
ditioning with the team, though he said
he'd like to do more. He said the team is
working on being ready to begin play in
the 3A Narrows League.
"We'll become one of two kinds of teams:
we'll either outskill them or we'll outrun
them," he said. "I've made several good
breakthroughs with the girls. They're all
willing and trying to do their best."
The Lady Highclimbers (0-2) begin
league play at 7 p.m. tonight against Lin-
coln at home.

By EMILY HANSON
emily@ma,oncousty,c:om,
Although Shelton is now
a 3A school, the boys' ten-
nis team has a tough open-
ing scheclule for its season,
playing its first four games
against teams from the 4A
Narrows League.
On Sept. 6, Shelton
opened its season at Gig
Harbor, where the boys lost
4-1.
"We just went in and
mixed up our lineup a little
because our first games are
against 4A teams." assis-
tant coach Dann Gagnon
said. "We're trying the kids
at different positions."
