The red indicates former tidal channels that existed on Nalley Island
and on the mainland west of the island before the area was diked in the
1930s. Salt water from Hood Canal flows into the estuary, mixing with
the Skokomish River, and creates an ideal habitat for several fish
species to feed and breed.

banks," he said. "I think we're seeing those conditions evolv-
ing."
To keep track of the estuary's health, which would indi-
cate the success of the project, several Skokomish biologists
have been collecting samples at 15 different sites along the
estuary, including an undisturbed reference site.
The biologists monitor the distribution, species and resi-
dency offish that they sample, and also collect insects at the
sites and study the contents of the fishes' stomachs.
"We basically make the fish throw up to look at their diet
in their stomachs," said habitat biologist Shannon Kirby of
the process, which is called gastric lavage. "It's the best non-
lethal way to look at stomach contents."
The monitoring began two years ago and will continue for
several years as the tribe collects enough data to determine
the estuary's baseline conditions. Gouley said.
"It's going to take a few years for these natural processes
to recreate the habitat completely," he said. "We're doing a
five-year sample now, then we'll come back in 10 to 15 years
and we'll be able to determine the effectiveness of the estu-
ary restoration project."
Next month, the tribe will be placing woody debris at key
sites along the estuary to create more cover for salmon to
rear, and next year the tribe is looking to develop a model to
determine if the area will be suitable for shellfish growing.
In the meantime, the tribe has seen the area transform
before its eyes.
"With Phase I the vegetation has come back instantly,
and with Phase II we're reaching an 89 percent cover of the
island," Gouley said. "We're seeing instant change and suc-
cess."
