Just how healthy the people
in one section of the country
are, on this basis, compared with
people in other areas, is brought
out in annual surveys made by
the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare and by
the Health Insurance Institute.
The index that is used to
determine general health is
disability days, which takes into
account the number of days that
people are forced by illness or
injury to stay home from work
or from school, to stay in bed or
otherwise to cut down
temporarily on their normal
activities.
According to figures recently
released, there has been a
noticeable increase in disability
days in Mason County's regional
area in recent years, as .there has
been in most other parts of the
country.
Based upon the latest report,
the local population is averaging
18.'5 days of restricted activity
per person per year, including
6.8 days spent in bed. This
compares with 18.1 restricted
days, 7.2 of them in bed, 10
years ago.
Elsewhere throughout the
nation, people were on the
disability list for an average of
17.2 days, of which 6.7 were
bed days. School children took
5.6 days off, on average, for
health reasons.
Because of wages lost and
medical expenses incurred, the
economic loss is great.
In Mason County, applying
,he average rate of disability in
the regional area locally, it adds
up to an overall loss of 253,000
activity days per year for the
population as a whole.
A considerable amount of it
represents time taken off by
workers because of illness or
injury. The average nationally is
4.9 days per employed person.
In general, it appears, a
family's state of health is linked
with its mode of life and its
economic well-being.
The American Medical
Association finds that the
healthiest people in the country
are those with better-than-
average incomes living on farms
in the Midwest.

Coots reward fund given
The Mason County Search
and Rescue Council received a
donation of $942.39 this week.
The money was that which
had been donated into a special
fund in October, 1971 for
information leading to discovery
of what had happened to
l l-year-old Kelly Coots, who
had disappeared and was the
object of an extensive search at
the time.
The boy's parents had asked
that if the search for their son
was not successful that the
money be given to the Search
and Rescue Council, whose
members had spent many hours
in the search for the missing
boy.
The reward fund had
received donations from citizens
and service clubs.
Since five years have elapsed
since the boy disappeared and no
information has ever been turned
up, the trustees of the fund
donated the money to the
council in accordance with the
wishes of the parents of the boy.
The check was presented to
Caroline Pollock, chairman of
the council, Tuesday night.
The search for the missing
boy was conducted in October,
1971 after he had disappeared
on his way home in Shelton.
City and county law
enforcement personnel
investigated every possibility and
many continued to follow leads
for months, including trips to
neighboring states.
More than 35 Explorer
Scouts from Mason and Thurston
Counties searched for many
days, and again at various times
throughout the county. The
Shelton Timber Runners and
Belfair Pack Rats
four-wheel-drive groups donated
their time and equipment to
searching roads and trails.
County and city persomlel also
donated their spare time and
radio equipment to cover all
areas as completely as possible,
as did many citizens in all
communities in the county.
The Emergency Ser,vices
office was manned day and night
and continued to stay open until
late in the evening for several
I I
weeks for those who wished to
examine maps depicting the areas
covered.
Hunters, brushpickers and all
those traveling the back roads
throughout the county were
asked to be on the lookout for
the missing boy and for any
suspicious area.
No weakening of codes
If we are going to continue to be
proud that we are tunericans
there must be no weakening of
the codes by which we have
lived; by the right to meet your
accuser face to face, if you have
one; by your right to go to
church or the synagogue or even
the mosque of your own
choosing; by your right to speak
your mind and be protected in
it.
