The Climber Chlorinettes:
Hey, are these girls on
something or WHAT!?
By STEVE PATCH
It's not because the thermo-
stat's outta whack or there's too
much chlorine.
"No, but you can just kinda feel
it in turnout," says Rob Phelan,
visibly impressed.
What the Climbers' veteran
swim coach is talking about, of
course, as his girls' 1999 season
gets under way this week, is
simply energy.
"Yeah, a lot of excitement in
comparison to last year and
things like that," says Coach. "It's
a small group of experienced kids
and a whole lot of young new
kids, but they have a lot of energy
and they're friendly and willing to
try things.
"It's awesome. This is fun."
RETURNEES include seniors
Lisa McGrew, Amanda Peters
and Laura Bob, juniors Jonelle
Kasperski, Samantha McDowell,
Rebecca Speigle, Sun-Young
Kwon, Marie Keyzers and Megan
Powers and sophomores Lindsay
Tozier, Hayley Travis, Kalina
Jazuk and Mandy Crossen.
Newcomers include Swiss ex-
change student Katrin Ebersold,
senior Autumn Hart, junior Jen-
nifer Hunt and ninth-graders
Hattie Wallace, Melissa Kasper-
ski, Ashley Gottula, Tiffany Bry-
den, Rachel Hunt, Heather Mc-
Ghee, Katie McElliott, Kristina
Saeger, Whitney Travis, Jordan
Gorsch, Katie Platt and Margie
Ahrens.
"We have a trio in Jonelle,
Samantha and Rebecca that's
kinda taking things under their
own wings," says Phelan, refer-
ring to his top district performers
from a year ago. "All three of
them are extremely smart indi-
viduals and know that they have
to get things done. And all three
of them are very athletic."
MORE QUICK TAKES by the
coach:
On Jonelle: "Very spunky. Very
strong and determined - and a
smart young lady. She's getting to
be a good swimmer. She has
learned how to work- and work
hard. And the kids respect her,
definitely."
On Keyzers: "Made some great
al. Very athletic. And is really
energetic about things - about
learning and trying things. She's
gonna be an outstanding
swimmer."
On Gottula: "She's got (age-
group) Sharks experience. Knows
all four strokes. And she is gonna
be relied upon heavily."
'No, but you can just kinda
FEEL it in turnout.'
drops in the 100 back and the 100
breaststroke last year. She's
really improved. Real tall girl.
She's gonna really help us out."
On Powers: "Very hard worker.
She kinda keeps things goin' in
workouts because of her hard-
work attitude."
On Speigle: "Third-year swim-
mer. District placer in the breast-
stroke last year. Developed the
butterfly - a good butterfly - and
has really kinda rounded out her
strokes in the backstroke and the
freestyle, and so the IM's gonna
come along this year."
On Tozier: "A major contribu-
tor last year as a freshman. This
year she's gonna have to really
step it up and fill in a lot of
holes."
On Hayley Travis: "She's a real
gutsy swimmer, willing to try
anything."
NINTH-GRADERS of note
are numerous, adds Coach, and
he ventures some specifics:
On Bryden: "Very tall individu-
On Melissa Kasperski:
"Jonelle's sister. Has a little
Sharks experience and knows all
four strokes. And just like Jonelle
is a real, real worker and is able
to focus and get things done.
She's gonna be relied upon too."
ON RACHEL Hunt: "Jenni-
fer's sister. Is working on diving.
Rachel has improved tenfold since
the beginning of the season. I
think she's gonna be able to really
help us out."
On McElliott: "(Climber grad)
Kendall's sister. A little Sharks
experience. Is a very good free-
styler, a very good swimmer.
She's gonna be relied upon right
from the start."
On Wallace: "She's got a lot
more Sharks experience than the
other kids. Probably the most ex-
perienced freshman coming in.
And she's gonna dive and swim."
On Gorsch: "(Climber grad)
Tracy's sister. Jordan's just a nat-
ural swimmer. It's just gonna

Chris' sister. She is one fun per-
son. She's got the greatest smile
and energy! She's gonna be kinda
like 'The Energizer,' ya know - to
keep things goin'. And she's got a
nice stroke."
NEW TO the program as well
this year is Phelan's right-hand
man, assistant coach Chad
Youngquist. Brand-new swim-
ming-class instructor at the high
school, Youngquist was a team-
mate of Phelan's at Central
Washington University a few
years ago and since has coached
there at Central and at Ellens-
burg High School as well. He has
a master's degree in physiology.
"It's great; we've got an awe-
some opportunity," says Phelan.
"We both speak pretty much the
same language and we both have
the same goals. I think it's gonna
work out real well."
Team managers are Alex
Keyzers and Ben Carlson, both
SHS seniors.
ALL IN ALL, says Phelan,
this year's squad is most promis-
ing indeed, and especially with its
strong first-year contingent.
"This whole freshman group is
athletic," he intones. "Much more
athletic than what we've had in
the past. We really haven't had
an athletic class since the juniors
- you know, when these four
came in here.
"So we have an opportunity
where, if we improve to where we
should be, we should be able to be
a good force in the league.
"Particularly with our fresh-
man class, maybe next year will
be a real good year - a turning
point for us."
