September is' National Suicide Pre- vention Month. The Washington State Department of Health and University of Washington’s Forefront Suicide Pre- vention have'joined with the state’s Health Care Authority, Department of Veteran Affairs, Department of Social and Health Services and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to ask Washingtonians to help prevent suicide. In a news release, the state Depart- ment of Health wrote that vigilance is especially important this year due to the increased stress, anxiety and de- pression people may be experiencing due to COVID-l9. The department encourages people to recognize warning signs, empathize and listen to the person you are con— cerned about, ask them if they are thinking about suicide, and if they say yes, remove the method they are thinking of using and call or text a cri- sis line. The suicide prevention line is 1-800-273-8255. “Suicide is preventable, and you don’t need special training,” state Sec— retary of Health John Wiesman wrote in the news release. “Everyone can learn to recognize the warning signs, show compassion, offer support, and seek help themselves if needed.” Hautala was born in Longview, and graduated from Mark Morris High' School in 1984. The loss of the doctor has prompted five debriefings at the hospital, includ- ing one with the entire staff, where fel- low employees shared stories. “It’s been pretty stressful,” Gushee said. “It’s been shocking.” Hautala was “a very skilled diag- nostician,” Gushee said. He enjoyed pediatrics -— “the kids liked him,” he} said. Hautala also donated money to pay for prescriptions for patients who could not afford them, Gushee said.
