Port of Allyn reviews 2020 progress
By Kirk Boxleitner

As government, business and non-
profit agencies chart their paths
through the ongoing pandemic, the
Port of Allyn took a moment to take
stock of its progress in 2020 as it pro-
ceeds through its comprehensive plan.
Port Executive Director Lary Cop—
pola noted the port began 2020 with
a new marina, replacing the wooden
dock felled by a storm on Jan. 4, 2019.
The port talked to its insurers for
nearly a year, but the eventual settle-
ment helped pay for a new marina ca—

pable of accommodating boats up to 50
feet long, with power outlets for 30 and
50 amps, plus water and a full pump-
out infrastructure, Coppola told the
Belfair Herald.
The roughly $376,000 cost of the
marina replaced the previous wooden
dock with Trex, a composite material
that’s more durable than wood.
Coppola thanked state Rep. Dan
Grifi‘ey, R—Allyn, and the rest of the
35th District legislative delegation for
coming through with a capital budget
grant for the project that, coupled with
the insurance settlement, allowed the
ribbon-cutting ceremony to take place

Another ongoing project is a new
staging area for the Allyn Boat Launch.
Coppola said the port purchased
the last piece of property it didn’t own,
bordering on the south side of the Al-
lyn Waterfront Park, at the end of
last year. The purchase was part of a
$500,000 Washington Recreation and
Conservation Office (RCO) grant for a
two-lane staging area that can simul-
taneously accommodate six 24-foot-
long boats and their tow vehicles.
“We just tore down the house on
the property last week,” Coppola said

will install a light pole. We still need
to build a median between the two
lanes, install some signage, and do
some landscaping. With this staging
area, we shouldn’t get boats backing
up on Drum Street and onto highway
3, which has not been uncommon in
the past.”
Perhaps the longest-running project
under Coppola’s more—than-five‘year
tenure has been the Sargent Oyster
House renovation, which he inherited
from Bonnie Knight, his predecessor as
executive director.
