and that famous walkway down the
hall to the restrooms, where I am sure
I am not the only one to wonder if the
ship was listing to port, then to star-
board, reaching for the walls to steady
myself, then steeling myself for what I
knew to be another challenging drive
home with no “point 0” in my potential
blow.
GLORY DAYS
During its heyday, from 2014 to
2017, the “little saloon that could”
hosted numerous free parties, holiday
feasts and community potlucks, and
with planks covering its single pool
table, turned it into a buffet spread
feeding maybe 100 guests for an em-
ployee’s birthday, someone’s new hair
style, or many other oddball occasions.
Bonfires blazed under the stars at
night and the Clank and ring of horse
shoes could be heard out to the tide
flats across the road. Live bands played
outside, the flickering fire on the faces
of those sitting, drinking and applaud-
ing from blankets on the grass.

Eagle Creek Saloon, on U.S. Highway 101 north of Lilliwaup, is set to close
at the end of the month. Journal photo by Mark Woytowich
see 70 or 80 motorcycles parked in the
lot. Or an entourage of shiny, polished
Mustangs or Corvettes.
Nostalgic? Sorry that it’s closing?
Visit its ghost at the Eagle Creek
Facebook page. It was nearly a cul-
tural force in Mason County, an un-
derground, greasy jeans version of the
music scene across the Canal in Union,
but more daring and dangerous.

On Facebook, check out the live
comedy shows, especially those around
2015. Talent came up from Seattle,
putting on shows like “Camp Eagle
Creek,” for free, thanks to an Eagle
Creek cook being a comedian. (Now
you know why the fish tasted funny,
ha-ha — and I am joking here, too, of
course.)

when gunfire seemed to erupt each
time a new Comedian took the stage.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“It’s the neighbor shooting off fire-
works,” someone next to me said.
“They’re getting us back for the loud
music last week.”
Mason County, I love thee so.
Though it’s not a hard date, Derek
Bekemans, the current owner, says
he’s hanging up his cook’s apron
around the end of September. I en-
courage anyone with Eagle Creek
memories to stop by and hoist a final
glass to those thousands of dollar bills
pinned, stapled or taped to every inch
of those hallowed walls.
In fact, if you can find your own
dollar bill, that would pay for the en—
tertaining look on Derek’s face when
you ask if you might take it back, you
know, as a souvenir.
