He states that he and Jack Miles met with the FAA in Seattle to re- fute the port's request to reclassi- fy the inactive runway. (The FAA was in Kent last time I was there.) For Miles to circumvent the port commission in order to lobby the FAA on behalf of Shelton Drags is a conflict of interest: big time, blatant and overt. M]les is a com- missioner 24 hours a day, seven days a week. His sworn duty is to perform on behalf of the port, and that includes accepting and sup- porting the decisions of the two other commissioners, even if he disagrees. For him to unilaterally take the side of a tenuous cause, knowing it is in conflict with the commission and has been tabled by the commission pending a con- sultant's report and completion of the master plan, is a violation of his oath of office. I believe Miles, as a lobby- ist for Shelton Drag Association, himself from voting on any mo- tion having to do with Shelton Drag Association. If he attempts to vote the commission majority will have to ignore him. Did Miles use a port vehicle or accept trans- portation paid for by drag-racing interests? Was a port credit card used to obtain meals or did Red- man pick up the tab? Did Miles involve port staff in a way that will require remuneration by the port? Either way Miles has shot himself in the foot as a commis- sioner. Unfortunately he has shot the port in the foot in the process, and the other commissioners are going to have to fix the problem. Bottom line here hasn't changed. The port isn't required to make a profit or to attract busi- ness for the local merchants, it has no responsibility for parks and recreation activities, does not belong in the museum busi- ness and is not responsible for adding jobs to the local economy. The port provides transportation and industrial facilities and that is all. The value of drag racing to the port is zero, and that is all the port commission needs to know. Several letters have appeared in this paper promoting Jay Hupp for the position of port commis- sioner. Rahn Redman's letter of September 6 is the best one yet.
