The Mary M. Knight football team im-
proved its record in a big way last week.
On Saturday, the Knight Owls de-
feated Oakville 62-0 at home.
"Our boys played well," head coach
John Schultz said. "We threw the ball
really well against them."
Senior quarterback Kyle Willey
completed 5-for-8 for 94 yards and four
touchdowns.
Together, the Knight. Owls (2-
0) gained 216 rushing yards on the
Acorns, with juni6r quarterback Aus-
tin Thompson rushing for 121 yards on
three carries.
In the first quarter, the Knight
Owls scored 32 points. With 10:23 left
in the quarter, senior running back
Juan Jimenez scored on a 22-yard run
and senior Matt Oien scored the two-
point conversion.
The Owls found the end zone again
with 7:51 left in the quarter when Wil-
ley connected with senior wide receiver
Nick Dierkop on an 8-yard touchdown

In the second quarter, MMK scored
one more touchdown.
With 2:36 left in the first half, se-
nior running back J.J. Pals scored on
a 20-yard run. For the two-point con-
version, Willey threw to O'Neil and the
Knight Owls went into halftime up 40-
0.
The game continued into the third
quarter due to a change in the eight-
man football mercy rule. In previ-
ous years, the mercy rule ended an
eight-man football game at halftime
if there was a 40-point scoring differ-
ential. This season, the Washington
Interscholastic Athletic Association
(WIAA) changed the rule so that there
would be a running clock in the second
half of the game once the 40-point dif-
ference was achieved.
"The hardest part (about playing a
team like Oakville) is the frustration of
not being able to go hard all the time,"
Willey said after the game. "Know-
ing when to take it easy and when to
drive."
The Knight Owls worked on this
during the second half of the game.
In the third quarter, the team
scored twice. The first came with 9:26
left in the third quarter, when Willey
threw to Jimenez for a 52-yard touch-
down. Willey then connected with Di-
erkop for the extra points.
With 5:08 left in the third quarter,
Thompson scored on a 51-yard run.
The two-point conversion failed.

But Myers has her eyes set
on a return trip to state.
"I would really like to
make it to state," Myers
said. "I made it my sopho-
more year with my sister."
She said the postseason
is her favorite time during
the girls' swim season be-
cause of how close everyone
gets.
Myers has been swim-
ming since she was in the
second grade and said her
older sister inspired her to
hit the pool.
"I just wanted to be like
her," she said. "I also love
the team aspect of swim-
ming and how it's like a
family. Plus, I really like
the sport. I'm not very
coordinated on land and
water seems to be my ele-
ment."
She said she was very
competitive with her sister
when they swam together
her sophomore year.
"Last year was a transi-
tion period and I've really
learned how to push myself
instead of relying on some-
one else to push me," Myers
said.
With her times as fast
as they were at the end of
last season, Myers said she
thinks she can improve a lot
this season on her journey

In both teams' first game of the 3A Narrows
League schedule. Shelton and Wilson both be-
gan play undefeated.
At the end of the game, Shelton sent Wil-
son back to Tacoma with a 35-25 loss while
the Highclimbers continued their undefeated
season.
"It was the first 3A team but more impor-
tantly, it was a worthy opponent and the kids
battled for almost the entire 48 (minutes),
which is good," head coach Matt Hinkle said.
The Highclimbers (3-0) trampled the Wil-
son Rams with 526 rushing yards compared
~o Wilson's 94. The Shelton rushing effort was
led by senior running back Ralph Kinne, who
amassed 321 yards on 44 carries with one
touchdown. Helping Kinne move the ball was
senior running back DeShon Bell with 224
yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns.
In the air, the Rams out~hrew the High-
climbers. Shelton senior quarterback Jared
Welander was 2-for-10 for 19 yards and one
touchdown while Moses Lewis completed 9-of-
15 for 116 yards and three touchdowns for
Wilson.
For much of the first quarter, the two teams
battled it out in the center of the field, with
neither getting close to scoring.
With 3:13 left in the first quarter, Weland-
er connected with junior wide receiver Michael
Sobotka on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Senior
kicker Shelby Salisbury made the PAT to give

the Highclimbers a 7-0 lead.
It took nearly the rest
of the first quarter for the
Rams to respond, but with
51 seconds left in the first
quarter. Wilson scored from
inside the 5-yard line. The
Rams' two-point conversion
failed and the game went
into the second quarter with
Shelton up 7-6.
Wilson dominated the
second quarter, shutting the
Highclimbers out for the 12
minutes while scormg two
touchdowns. The first was a 7-yard pass from
Lewis to Connor Patterson with 3:19 left in the
first half, after which the two-point conversion
again failed. Lewis then connected with Ben
Matz on an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:53
left in the half. Wilson's PAT failed and the
game went into halftime with the Rams up 18-
7.
"At the beginning of the game, we had quite
a few penalties," Hinkle said. "The frustrat-
ing thing was the personal conduct penalties.
We need to clean that up and we will. Besides
that. we played well."
Shelton junior defensive back Colton Hub-
ble -- who intercepted what likely would've
been a touchdown pass late in the game --
said the Highelimbers were sluggish going
into the first half.
"Our intensity wasn't up and our heads
weren't up," he said. "At halftime, we looked
each other in the eye and said, 'We got this.'
She ton-Mason
and we went out and got it."
The Highclimbers came back onto the field
for the second half in a fierce way. For the en-
tire third quarter, Shelton shut down the Wil-
son offense while scoring 22 points.
Kinne scored on a run from within 10 yards
with 8:26 left in the third quarter and then
scored a two-point conversion for Shelton.
With 6:04 left in the third quarter, Bell ran
in a 13-yard touchdown and Salisbury.sent the
PAT sailing through the posts.
Bell then scored a 59-yard touchdown with
59 second remaining in the third quarter.
Salisbury again scored the extra point and
Shelton went into the final quarter up 29-18.
With 8:21 left in the game, Lewis once
again connected with Matz, this time on a
24-yard touchdown pass. With the PAT good,
Wilson scored its final points, but Bell had one
more in him.
With 3:58 remaining in the game, Bell
rushed 40 yards ~o the end zone to give Shel-
ton a 10-point lead over Wilson, who would not
respond by the game's end.
"Wilson is a good team and they put us in
tough positions at times," Hinkle said.
Hubble said the Shelton defense has been
working well together this season.
"We're one te.am, one dream," he said.
Senior linebacker Thomas Gettle led the
defensive line with 13 tackles and one pass
deflection while Hubble had 10 tackles and
an interception. Senior defensive back Jacob
