Page 30 Shelton-Mason County Journal Thursday, Sept. 29, Obituaries Elmer Thomas Eells Elmer passed away peacefully on Sep‘ tember 21, 2022 in White Bear Town- ship, Minnesota. Elmer was born the eldest of children in St. Paul, MN on August 19, 1931. He grew up in Rush , City, MN and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950. He survived the Chosin Reservoir battle in Korea and served on the DMZ (border) in Vietnam in 1968. His communications work took him and the family to Okinawa and the Philippines and he was located in Camp Lejeune, NC for much of his ca- reer. Elmer retired to Bemidji, MN in 1972 where he fulfilled his lifelong am- bition of going to university and earned a BS. in Political Science (Magna Cum Laude) from Bemidji State University. After, graduation Elmer moved to Seattle, WA. He also spent many happy years watching the seals and cormorants on Hammersley Inlet in Shelton, WA. Elmer, as the eldest of a large, rural, working family, learned early on the importance of duty and personal responsibility. His service to his family, and to his country as a U.S. Marine, framed his long life, and are qualities passed on to his children, as well as his enduring humanity. ' He was an exemplary dad, family rock, pragmatic, super smart, with a dry sense of humor and an unerring ethical compass. A vora- cious reader, he consumed three newspapers a day supplemented with the New Yorker, Lapham’s Quarterly, and the London Review of Books.He was an expert on world political and religious history, spe- Cializing in the Middle East. He loved his family above all else, fol- lowed in no particular order by cigars, coffee, cats, beer, and a VERY dry martini. ' His closest friend of 90 years, Tuify (Rohland) Reider, remembers him as “a special human being — curious about all things that were worth the task of learning about.” Elmer is survived by wife Barbara (nee Lefley), children Patricia, Lawrence (Jeanne), Cynthia (Douglas), and Linda (Jim), siblings Ma— rie Weis, James Eells, Helen Lindquist, Betty Boyce, Katherine J ohn- son, Susan Eells, Clyde Eells, and Joe Eells, and special family friend Shelly Miller. He was predeceased by parents Elmer and Catherine, . siblings June, Grace Skinner, and Ronald, and special kitties Pearl and Libby. ' As a proud Marine Corps Veteran, Elmer’s last act of service was to donate his body to the University of MN Anatomy Bequest Program for medical education. He was born on De- cember 28th, 1949 in Westfield, Massa- chusetts. David is survived by siblings Amy, Danny, Eileen, Gary, Karen, and Laurie. , ‘ He moved to Washington State in the early 80’s, fell in love with the North- west, and never left. David retired from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard ,after 30 years of service. His greatest joys were hiking, climb- ing, fishing, and organic gardening. He will be missed greatly, and will forever be in our hearts. David Leonard Bilodeau William R. Laver W William R. (Bill, Billy, Gator) Laver Born November 1970, in Harlan, Iowa, to Leslie Laver, Marlys Soll, and big sister, April, Bill graduated from Timpanogos High School in Provo, Utah in 1988, and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. He married twice be— fore landing in San Diego and marrying lucky number three. The family moved to Washington in 2006. After his 2010 retirement from service, he went to work for BNSF and joined the CVMA in 2021. Bill was tragically killed on Sep- tember 16, 2022. He is preceded in death by his grand- parents and his nephew, Joshua Thomp— son, and has left behind his Wife, six children, two grandchildren, sister, inti- mate friend, nieces, nephews and both parents as well as hundreds of , friends. . A celebration of life will be conducted October 2, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the Shelton Civic Center, 525 West Cota Street, Shelton, WA, 98584. Following the service, beginning at 3:00 p.m., a procession to Shelton Memorial Park, 1605 Van Buren, Shelton, WA 98584, for a Military Honors ceremony.
