Tonight at 7:
SHS grad Ron Starr to read
poetry to his dad's music
A father-son duo will provide
music and poetry downtown to-
night.
The Olympic Poets and Writers
Workshop will host Seattle poet
Ran Starr, a former Sheltonian,
and his father, Shelton flutist
Larry Starr, for a free reading
and recital at 7 p.m. in Saint Da-
vid's Hall at 218 North Third
Street.
The reading is part of a regular
series hosted by the local writers'
circle.
RaN STARR, WHO graduat-
ed from Shelton High School in
1972, studied at Washington
State University, majoring in
computer science and English.
Much of his career has been spent
writing software manuals for the
Microsoft Corporation. He cur-
rently divides his time between
writing poetry, which he took on
seriously three years ago, and do-
ing technical writing.
Since he began working with
poetry, Starr has taken writing
workshops with poet Marvin Bell
at the Centrum Port Townsend
Writers' Conference and at the
University of Southern Oregon in
Ashland, and with poet Billy Col-
lins at Centrum. He is influenced
by such writers as Polish poet
Zbigniew Herbert, he says, add-
ing that he admires Herbert's
"playful intellectualism." He par-
ticipates in a regular poetry
workshop group in Seattle.
He describes his own work as
"domesticated surrealism." He
has had work published in Crab
Creek Review, Chrysanthemum,
WordWright, Slightly West and
Stringtown, and one of his poems
is included in work displayed on
King County's Metro buses. He
lives in Seattle with his wife,
Ann.
LARRY STARR will perform
a program of woodwind music to
set the scene for his son's reading.
Dr. Starr, who lives with his wife,
Mildred, at Island Lake, is retired
from a career in chemistry at the
Rayonier research facility on the
Shelton waterfront, and recently
retired from teaching chemistry
at The Evergreen State College.
Larry Starr teaches clarinet,
flute, saxophone and piccolo at
Westside Music in Olympia.
He has been featured in nu-
merous recitals in the area and
has performed regularly with
school musical productions and
other civic programs.
THE PROGRAM will take
place in the fireplace room in the
lobby of the hall. Coffee and cook-
ies will be served. The hall is ac-
cessible to the handicapped.
Those who attend the reading
will be welcome to join partici-
pants in a Hispanic ministry con-
ference upstairs in the hall's
great room for a short series of
comic silent movies accompanied
by organist Andy Crow.

As the fall days dawn, it's hard
to miss the new-each-morning
creations of spiders.
Yesterday we watched an orb
spider spinning her web on the
window outside the breakfast
nook. The radiating network was
in place and now she was circling
the frame, connecting sticky fila-
ments to complete the classic spi-
derweb.
Her elegant gold-and-brown
striped legs served as connectors
and calipers. The hind pair of legs
reminded me of a harpist's fingers
as she plucked the navigable radi-
ating guywires, touching each in
turn to her spinnaret to connect
one more link in the web.
I'm sure the spider was a "she,"
for a smaller, dessicated version
of her brown-and-tan visage was
stored in her previous web on the
adjacent window pane. I was re-
minded that spiders have some
questionable habits including
benedicticide.
Nonetheless, she was beautiful
and s'o was her web. I watched
entranced as she made her
rounds, about two minutes per
round, 40 or more attachments
per rotation.
My mother would have freaked
at the idea of watching a spider
all through breakfast. So would
my son. I recognize the symp-
toms, but I get them from snakes,
not spiders.
The Indians say spiders carry
stories in their stomachs. I stlp-
pose in some ways you could say
those thin lines playing out on
the web, round and round, set to
capture insects, were stories in
their way.
They caught me. I was so mes-
merized I almost forgot to g() to
work.

As the fall days dawn, it's hard
to miss the new-each-morning
creations of spiders.
Yesterday we watched an orb
spider spinning her web on the
window outside the breakfast
nook. The radiating network was
in place and now she was circling
the frame, connecting sticky fila-
ments to complete the classic spi-
derweb.
Her elegant gold-and-brown
striped legs served as connectors
and calipers. The hind pair of legs
reminded me of a harpist's fingers
as she plucked the navigable radi-
ating guywires, touching each in
turn to her spinnaret to connect
one more link in the web.
I'm sure the spider was a "she,"
for a smaller, dessicated version
of her brown-and-tan visage was
stored in her previous web on the
adjacent window pane. I was re-
minded that spiders have some
questionable habits including
benedicticide.
Nonetheless, she was beautiful
and s'o was her web. I watched
entranced as she made her
rounds, about two minutes per
round, 40 or more attachments
per rotation.
My mother would have freaked
at the idea of watching a spider
all through breakfast. So would
my son. I recognize the symp-
toms, but I get them from snakes,
not spiders.
The Indians say spiders carry
stories in their stomachs. I stlp-
pose in some ways you could say
those thin lines playing out on
the web, round and round, set to
capture insects, were stories in
their way.
They caught me. I was so mes-
merized I almost forgot to g() to
work.
